I'm well aware that Rift is not the most popular game in the Crucible, but it's my favorite way to play Destiny. Please allow me to explain.
I've been playing shooters with a Clan - the same Clan - since Halo 2. We've taken a long path to get to Destiny, migrating through Call of Duty, Gears of War, Battlefield, Grand Theft Auto, Titanfall, and anything else that let has let us play as a team. Throughout those journeys, I've always loved objective-based gameplay.
My favorite scenarios occur when a game lets me acquire a crucial element (i.e. "Ball Taken!" or "I've got the bomb!") and choose my own path. I've never been comfortable defending a fixed position, and I'll usually lose a one-on-engagement in a kill-or-be-killed scenario. In a gametype like Rift, however, a gamer like me gets to shine. I know I'm not alone.
It's a rush to collect the Spark and go into full Quarterback Mode. I'm always telling my Clan that, if you want the Spark, you need to be willing to call the shots. The perfect Spark runner has a good sense for enemy choke-points. They link up with teammates and drive forward as a unified front. Or, they can use those same teammates to lure enemy defenders away from the flank they intend to exploit. Some of the best moves in Rift have nothing to do with pulling the trigger. I love the mental game - the tactical cat and mouse of it all.
I know... I know... This makes me "part of the problem," entering Rift with a solid team and winning through the brute strength of coordination. Playing Rift reminds me of amazing times that I had with the same old friends playing Assault or Capture the Flag. You can't change what you love. I'll take the scorn that comes from what we call "Victory through superior recruitment" if it inspires just one of you to go here and dip your toe in the water.
Please don't be mad at me for saying so. Please understand that I've been cannon fodder in every other Iron Banner. I've caught more than my fair share of Nova Bombs in the face like an idiot as I tried to control Zone B all by myself. I've been sniped out of the air like a clay pigeon as I floated around on Warlock wings in a game of Clash. I've bathed every map of the Crucible in my own blood - and I've been happy to do so. I love playing Destiny, and I don't mind giving you my Light. Someone has to lose, and it usually tends to be me. With Rift, I get to enjoy what's in my wheelhouse. It's been refreshing.
So, if you've played Rift this past week, I thank you. This Iron Banner has been a great time, and I truly appreciate the people who have played with me, even if against me. I've added some much-needed Light to my Warlock. I got to reconnect with some people on my friends list in the ways we used to play. Much love for every single Guardian we've met up with through Matchmaking - and that one lone wolf we pulled onto our team.
Mind you, the Crucible Team did not put Rift into Iron Banner circulation because I asked them to. I think maybe they know that there are players like me in the community, and they wanted to give us a chance to play some ball. Peace.

4 RepliesIf you had a bad time this IB, then guess what? Might not be your game mode. Ultimately, the people who are crying about matadors and stormcallers such... Your complaint would stand regardless of the game mode, so this isn't the forum to complain about your balancing ideas. IB rift is fun. It's fun playing Rift with the general population of crucible players rather than the people who exclusively play rift. I only knocked off the bounties on one character this time instead of three due to time constraints, but it was fun. If you were a real guardian in the tower and Efrideet, Saladin, or Shaxx challenged you to a different style of competition, you would adapt. Sorry if it isn't your cup of tea, but don't think that your upset is everyone else's as well. Deej, you and the team can test any gamemode out in IB. I endure through the clash ones (that I'm not a fan of but still tear it up in) and enjoy the control and rift ones. You could put up a 6v6 elimination IB and I would be happy to play it. HELL, it could be 6v6 salvage, and I would play it to see what that'd be like. You guys do you . Cheers and happy holidays to all of you.

Cool man. Me too.

8 RepliesEdited by texasguru710: 12/13/2016 7:54:23 PMLets steal a gamemode from halo. How original. P.s. we know bungie made halo. Tryin to its unoriginal. Duuuuuhhhh. Those who do not get it, plz look both ways before you cross the street. Lol

I respect your opinion but Rift is a failure it's like a mix of 2 gamemode in Call of Duty: Demolition and Search and Destroy with unlimited spawn. If one team rekt the other team it's will be spwan trap and spwan kill. So for me Rift is a failure

I agree with your reasoning. Rift wasn't the best gamemode for Iron Banner, but I love it too. I went in without a team and was hardly matched up against other solo players. However even a team made up of solo players can outmatch a fireteam of 6 if played right. The mind games are the bit that makes Rift fun. Hearing the callout that the enemy has the spark and rushing to defend one of the 3 main routes to your rift, only to find that the runner doubled back and went a different way is one of the best things about it. The mind games you can play. A friend picked the spark up? Flank around and distract the enemy team, or support your spark runner from the back with a Scout Rifle, or become a living shield for them while pushing forward. Those are moments are where you feel the excitement about co-ordination and teamwork, especially when solo. As much as the majority of tye vocal players did no like it, Rift is still a great activity and I do not think it should be removed from the Iron Banner rotation. Just make it less frequent, so the people who want to play every gamemode as if it were Clash quit complaining.
The issues with lag were annoying though. But that is pretty standard.
1 ReplyWhoa that feels good to see a personal comment from one of you, Deej! I'd like to tell you two things: - Good job with Rift. It's fun, strategic, team oriented, and even better in IB because of the loot (you did it right since RoI). - When will come a real CTF mode like in the good old QIII Arena? ;o)
-
Deej show them how much of a true iron lord you are

I enjoy playing Rift also. Going solo into the que was not fun as I couldn't communicate with anyone. Its also nice to have an objective like running the spark, it breaks up pure combat game play! I would however like it even more if you got the rewards under control..... One mote of light for winning the match makes you less likely to continue playing. Still a lot of fun!

2 RepliesFeast your eyes on my glory DEEJ. #MOTW https://account.xbox.com/en-us/gameclip/7524ef5b-105f-4ee7-abff-16c03fcc30da?gamerTag=i%20drop%20bombs%20yo&scid=37770100-f9ae-4b80-9dad-7c1d0ec14469 I LOVE RIFT.

I've never been the biggest fan of rift, probably from all the deaths I've gotten trying to grab the spark, but this was again another very enjoyable ib.
-
3 RepliesRift is honestly the best way to play Iron Banner. Kill Confirmed was another great way. Pretty much anything that incentives movement vs camping control points is great.

I've never been a big rift fan, since it pretty much forces you to play as a team of 4-6 and rarely do I play with more than 1 or 2 friends at a time, but I actually had fun this Iron Banner and kept playing with at least two others the whole time. Sure we got stomped a few times, but those games where I, someone else on my fireteam, or one of the blueberries with us was able to clutch a game (no spoken communication with the berries) for our victory made it worthwhile in my opinion. Rift really does take coordinated teamwork to win and if you're mad that you can't carry a game by shooting people in the head with your quickscope pro skills, then play a different game mode. Iron Banner changes every month, sitting it out one time isn't going to kill you. Hey, I hate trials and how sweaty it makes every game and seeing the same loadouts on everyone so I just stopped playing it. If you're not having fun, play something else. That's it.
-
I had a great time in IB again. Had rarely played Rift, so it was nice to have a completely different type of focus in this event.
-
Real cute,.. where is SRL?
-
1 ReplyThis Iron Banner Rift made me absolutely love it. It takes skill, especially if you're like me and play solo
-
Halo is the best.

4 RepliesHow do you like it at 360 light

I understand changes to gametpyes. I understand the concept of objective based games. I do usually prefer them also. But the scoring system isn't setup for proper objective and neither is the spawning pace or placements. Ctf in halo was awesome. But swat, snipers, and multiteams were my favorite still. Objective based games like csgo and other bomb objectives have a warm place in my heart, as does team deathmatch. That being said, I hate rift. Least favorite gametype in Destiny. Supremacy isn't much better honestly. Control is where it is at. Where the award point system works. Everyone's entitled to their opinion and unlike half the forum dwellers I dont hate you Deej. I've got respect for you working this job.

Well said no arguments here
-
Keep mixing it up. It's good to do every game type.
-
Very well said, Congradulations!

Nice post deej. I know you get a lot of flak, but I can appreciate your view point on this. I am 50/50 when it comes to rift. Iron banner is more fun with a full team, and stressful playing solo. But I can see your posituon, even if I might disagree or not enjoy rift as my iron banana game mode of choice. Thanks for reaching out and sharing with us.

2 RepliesLoved playing Rift. Being spark runner is so much fun. Favorite dunk last week was on frontier when I just ran straight down the middle through the enemy team because they didn't think anyone was stupid enough to go down the middle. Didn't even get shot at.
-
i personally enjoyed rift it mixed up the iron banner a little bit but there is a bug cause if you kill the runner when he's about to ignite it it still counts as if he ignited the rift please fix this
-
I don't get why people don't like this game mode, it can be so exhilarating and created some of my favourite clutch moments ever.

Edited by texasguru710: 12/13/2016 5:44:11 PMWow you guys obviously got a good education. Taking one thing from another game wether you made it or not is copying old content. Saying that they made both games is irrelevant and goes to show how dumb people have to switch wording around to try and make other people look stupid. You guys are the best. Troll on!
