You don't need to get along to beat Oryx

So we had four of our core fireteam together, and got in two randoms. One was an amiable guy with a Southern accent, was glad to be there, said the totems run was the smoothest he'd been a part of. The other guy, (referred to as Bossy from now on), wasn't so bad per se. Sure, it's understandable that he wanted to beat the raid, and was going to do everything in his power to make sure that happened. But....he constantly told people what to do, decided to assume a position of leadership when it was neither needed nor wanted. So our people started to poke fun at this....and he did not react well. He would ask if people knew about taking aura on Warpriest, and at this point one of our team innocently said, no, and could he please tell her. Our fireteam leader interrrupted and said that she knew perfectly well- she was just messing. We beat totems and warpriest first try, perfectly smooth, no deaths. We head to Golgoroth, and here's where things started to get contentious. He asked if everyone knew how to do challenge mode. We had someone say, that no, could he please explain it. So he went over to the bridge, started to go over the routine, firing to point out stuff. Our fireteam leader said, no, no you don't have to do that. Then a 2nd member innocently said that she didn't know how it worked. So the guy was explaining where to go, and our fireteam leader said, "No, really STOP. You don't have to do that. The first person who asked isn't even in the fireteam (was just in party chat, trying to cause trouble)." So the guy could have been chill and laughed it off, but he reacted badly. He said, "What do you mean, STOP. You need to f**King know what to do, to get the raid done.” Our guy said, “No, you don’t need to show us- they’re just messing with you. That guy is not even in the fireteam.” So Bossy went on about why did he want a guy in his party chat that wasn’t f**king raiding. Anyway, Bossy wanted to run single file, and we normally run ping pong- but the amiable random was more comfortable with ping pong, so we ran that (after Bossy said it was a democracy, and we’d vote, which led to our fireteam leader informing him that 4 of us play together every day, and he was pretty sure that Bossy would lose any vote {unnecessary but our fireteam leader was getting salty}. Then Bossy made some odd comment about how this was capitalism, not democracy….). And of course we ran it perfectly, first go, two cycles and no taken. Thing went fairly calmly in Sisters- not much need for discussion and we ran it perfectly. On Oryx, however, we of course needed to get things lined up. Bossy favored 16 bombs (we normally run 8 and 8), so we went along with that. I think Bossy took plate 1 or plate 3. I was one titan, our fireteam leader was the other. But….our fireteam leader took exception to Bossy informing us that one titan should run blessings, the other weapons (he was getting worked up). So he said, seemingly joking, but pretty aggressively, “I think we’ll both just run weapons, because we can handle it and we’ll see how that goes”. Bossy was annoyed by this. He said, “Why would you do that? It doesn’t stack.” I guess Bossy’s main issue was that he seemed to have no sense for when people were joking; he took everything literally. I messaged our fireteam leader, saying “Lol, I’ll run blessings and run to bombs- why are you f**king with him?” Our fireteam leader had had enough, I guess, and needed to vent (this often happens if we have combative randoms- but it usually happens after the raid is done). He said in party chat, “Why am I f**king with him, Fearsome? Because he can look around and see all of these 335s- he should know that we know what we are doing. If we don’t know what we are doing at this point, then we shouldn’t even be running the raid.” Bossy just said, “….I agree with you. You shouldn’t be running the raid.” Our people thought for sure Bossy would get kicked at this point. But I guess it was one of those situations of mutual need; he knew we were a good fireteam and we were on the cusp of finishing, and we knew how hard it is to get a competent random to run the raid with. So we ran it, and ran it well- despite the fact that (1) our runner lost communication early on, so no one could hear him calling out that he had the relic, and (2) on the last cycle, when it was time to run to bombs, half the fireteam lost party chat (XBox live was acting up), so we couldn’t hear Bossy and our fireteam leader calling to run to bombs. I was like, ‘….no one is calling to run to bombs…’ then saw people running out. So I ran. Then I waited to hear someone call to step into bombs, but heard nothing. Then I saw a detonation message appear, so I quickly stepped into bombs. Because of the lack of communication, three of us died in bombs- yet we all stepped in, and all bombs went off. The last three did enough dps for us to finish. Bossy left without a word, while the amiable random thanked us. So it was a pretty remarkable run- people not getting along, open hostility, yet smooth teamwork. In the end, it was the fastest run I’d ever been a part of (we’re not a speed-running team, so it was as usual, with people taking bathroom breaks or stopping to retrieve weapons from the vault, or making themselves up a drink). I guess you just need six people who know what they are doing, and can get the job done.

  • Sorry, but I gotta side with bossy. I've been in raid teams where people claim to know what they are doing and it's obvious they don't. So from then on, it's easiest to assume that everyone you get from LFG is an idiot. That way they can prove you wrong, but at least you won't be disappointed. Bossy assumed the worst in you, which is wise advice for frequent LFG users. But your team made it worse by egging him on. Joking and laughing is one thing. Being serious about your trolling is bad form for LFG. I can't even count how many hours I've wasted on LFG teams. Have fun, but when you start trolling with a straight face, it makes you a douche.

      • So basically he couldn't take a bit of banter. All the ten year olds on this forum can't differentiate between banter and trolling. Thats why i dont use lfg, if my boys aren't on i just do some solo stuff. Lfg is full of people who think they are beast, i would rather take a noob and take twice as long.

      • As the guy who is often the random, from Vog on, it is always best to assume everyone knows the raid until proven otherwise. It is usually pretty easy to tell a good fireteam from a confused one. To those on a fireteam, it is difficult to come into this situation even as an experienced random. Teams have their own timings, non-verbal cues and call-outs, even when using the same known strategies. I often get disrespected for asking how THEY run the raid. You wanted respect from Bossy, but you weren't willing to give it, and from the sound of it, he deserved it, proven by the fact you didn't boot him.

          • I used to run raids. Then they added the filters. Now everyone requires a mic when I can literally run every role perfectly without a mic.

          • With the way you explained your team I'm surprised you needed two randoms. Good read tho. But I can't stand when there are ppl in chat that aren't playing the game it confuses the sh.it outta me

            • Personal opinion, but I dislike bossy people in my raid fire team. I almost always raid with randoms and tend to have zero fun when raiding with fire teams that have bossy members. Raided with some randoms today on my second character and finished it in 58 minutes on the dot. Smoothest run I've ever done and thoroughly enjoyed it the whole time with a fire team of lighthearted, humorous people.

                  • You could, in all honesty, throw a little of the blame your way. Speaking as a former guild master in a progression raiding guild in WoW, I would have told my raid leader to knock off joking with the random pug. And I had a policy of "not in the raid, do not talk about strategy in voice chat." So yeah, jerking the guy's chain by having people not even in the party say they didn't know the fight? That's on you. Bossy might have been a colossal asshole but that didn't make screwing with the guy willing to help you out right.

                    • Just because your all 335 does not mean you know how to run raid. "Bossy" was doing his part to try and help, you could have said that you all knew what to do but no, instead you all "trick" (amazing joke, very funny to hear someone explaining something when you really know it. Hilarious) him and later he's at fault huh? Your fireteam leader is a dumbass

                              • I raid with randoms mostly so I've ran into that situation before once joining into a team and another time in my own fire team. On one occasion I remember getting shit at warpriest cuz the dude that was with me died and apparently it was my fault so I kindly after a heated back and forth advised him to take a different side and I'd solo it x)...dude was butt hurt threatened to boot me I said go for it I'll take my fire team with me Lolz so as a result of him being a prick I talked so much crap until we finished the raid. Point is be nice to each other a good leader will always work with people and be flexible just cuz u may know something doesn't mean they just as good or even know how to perform the task given. Be patient open minded different people have different personalities long as u keep your head on a raid will be completed just maybe not as smoothly as it should.
