There's one minor flaw in your statement. Warlock melee is rather slow, to balance out its range. So optimally, if you can get in close, even if the Warlock gets the first hit, it's not enough. Unless it's a Sunsinger. In that case rest in scorched pieces.

All melees are the same speed, however certain gauntlets/gloves can roll with increased melee speed :3

I've done rather extensive testing, and I've found that Hunter melees are in the middle in terms of speed, Titans at the fastest, and Warlocks at the bottom. I've used gauntlets on my Warlock that increase melee speed, yet I still get outdone by Titans even when I get the first hit.

Are you sure? Whenever I get into a fisting match, whoever gets the first blow is usually the winner. Heh, learn something new everyday. :3
