She turned around angrily and began to gather her things. "He's out there Peter -- and he's someone I'm supposed to remember." Her words dispersed the forced silence. Peter sighed again heavily as he began again. "Okay so what if he is out there? What if some where out there among the ashes and remains of this city he is out there? What are you gonna do? Do you really believe that he could just arise from the grave? Just like you?" The frustration in his voice cluttered about the air. "I mean honestly Xinyue, the fact that your ghost chose you was something already quite unfathomable, but to say that you remember what no other Guardian does, even those who specialize in remembering, is just too much." She stood at the edge of their perimeter, her hands on her rifle, rested. "Look Xinyue, I've listened to your tales about your fights with the Fallen in Siberia and Har'bing. I've listened to your incredible eye witness accounts about seeing Golden Age weapons, Amhakara, a dancing thrall, Cabal scouting parties on Earth, the Crow Prince in the Tower and even the Titan from the mountains -- I've listened to all of them and never questioned you or asked for fact checks -- but this is just too much for me." He rubbed his arm and stared at the ground. He thought about saying more but Xinyue dropped her spare pack she had been carrying since they first set out from Old Russia, turned around, and began to walk away. He wanted to chase after her, and tell her that the reason he just couldn't take these stories was because she spoke about the soldier in gray like if he was more than just some distant, foggy memory. As far as Peter believed, she talked about the soldier as if he was her lover in some other life time. It wouldn't bother Peter too much if they had never slept together that one night out in the moth yards, or that other night on the city perimeter, but the fact of the matter was that Peter had long suspected that after traveling together for over 3 years, he had fallen in love with her. Of course other guardians had come and gone from their group -- Nevarez the Sunstriker, Heather the Night stalker, and even Mei the voidwalker, but none of them had ever stayed with them that long. He wasn't sure why he had fallen in love with her -- Xinyue made him so annoyed with her fantastic stories and "Peter Peter you're not gonna believe this " moments. She was rash, angry too easy, quick to argue and even quicker to draw out her favorite sidearm. She had left him hanging twice in a fire fight, and even slept with that random Hunter while she was on a mission on Luna. But despite that, he knew that it was her other oddities that he loved. And that's why her obsession with the soldier in gray made him so angry.
