Racism: Taking a Stand
I'm sure this will get me some serious flaming, but I think it's worth posting anyway.
Starting January 1st, I'm pledging to BOOTany player from Raids I'm leading who uses the N-word. If I'm not leading the group I will simply dismiss myself after stating that I make it a habit not to play with racists.
If you would also like to take a stand against casual racism, I'd encourage YOU to do the same.
I'm doing this because I'd guess about 25% of the raid groups I put together via the forum (or join via the forum) feature somebody who seems to be using the anonymity of internet gaming as a excuse to get their otherwise-probably-contained racism out of their system. Up until now I've just ignored it and focused on doing my part in the fireteam. And while I don't think I'm going to change anyone's behavior, I just can't abide the tacit approval that my silence communicates to these people.
Pre-emptive response #1: Yes, I would absolutely exercise a double-standard and not kick a black person who uses the term. It doesn't make me a hypocrite if I'm consistent in responding to the intent of the usage and not simply it's usage.
Pre-emptive response #2: Not everyone who uses the n-word is racist? Fine, then we'll say I'm responding to the behavior an not it's inferred statement about the value of the person. But seriously, if you're not black and you use this term you're either trying and failing to sound "street" or you're racist.
If disagee with what I'm doing, PLEASE block me and/or never play with me. I can virtually guarentee you will be doing me (and yourself) a favor.

All you can do is be an example yourself online. All posts like this do is fuel the fire behind such people who do these things anyway. It's not about pointing out the obvious problems but rather being part of the solution. I personally haven't ran into such hate and would leave any group of I did. My heart goes out to anyone having to deal with a douche though, be it racist, sexist, bullying or otherwise. We should all love no matter what! And just as much so with anonymity.

1 AntwortenI personally have this issue all the time. I'm deemed as a "white" black dude, so guys online surprisingly find out my race as I get vocally offended by them saying N****r or N***a.. Things always get awkward. Despite the honest truth of this thread, it's not gonna change regardless. People who use that word are just downright ignorant for not knowing where it comes from or what it means. I am a black male and I have never included that word as part of my casual vocabulary. While I would wish that others would not as well it's simply a waste of time trying to get them to understand. I'm glad however to see some people out there (even in the realm of destiny) have an elevated perception.

1 AntwortenWhat it it's a black guy saying it in a hugely southern accent? I have a guy in my raids that says it and the way he says it is with "affection". He means we are his "guys" or "homies" and is comfortable enough with us. He doesn't say it maliciously and frankly it is the TONE that makes it racist. I know what racism is having been through it. I also know when guys are just being themselves and not using the words to hurt others.

Wait are you saying everyone who uses the word is a racist then with your preemptive responses you won't kick a black person. So wouldn't that be a racist double standard? Yes slavery is over, yes we have laws against discrimination and yes sometimes people of different races do indeed fall into their stereotypes (if I show you an overweight balding white man drinking a pbr at a Nascar in the south with 6 kids around him are you more likely to think PHD or redneck moron? ) But the point is that each generation does not start from a zero advantage point on the scale of life. The same way that you are more likely to be rich if you are born into money or value education if your parents are educated or follow a religion if you are brought up religious your family past impacts your success. This includes their parents and grandparents opportunities of which there were nowhere near as many and until 60 years ago (2 generations) what are the odds that a black person was going to really be ceo, manager etc. Those odds are better today but the levels of education and positive stereotypes that white people and in some aspects Asian people enjoy are still not a present reality for black people (or Latino but that's a different set of reasons than this thread). If you think that black kids wake up and decide to do statistically worse in school and glorify gangsters/earn less in life etc. because that's just what they themselves chose to do with their lives then I have a bridge to sell you ...

Sorry but no one living was a slave or owned a slave nor was anyone alive a child of a slave or slave owner. There are blacks and white that came here after the fact so why should they be included? We have black CEOs, athletes, musicians, actors ,senators (republicans ones at that), and a black president, all are jobs of high wealth and power so who is being held back? People don't want equality they want superiority.

Majority of rap songs have the "n" word in them constantly. And they expect us not to use that word? The word doesn't mean what it used to, it's 2015 there are no slaves anymore like back then not discrimination to jobs or seats or schools or whatever. I say it to my friends all the time and they are white. It's just another word for to replace friend, mate, buddy, pal. Even my black friends say "sup -blam!-" to me when I see them and I'm white so what the hell am I supposed to say back? It's not like black people hide the word as much as they can because they are ashamed to hear it. They use it more than white people. If I was black and hated that word so much because I thought it was racist I would avoid using or hearing it as much as possible yet the very large amount of black people use the word.

Wow. Just wow. I would consider myself to be VERY non racist having many friends of all races and cant stand the N word or any other racist slang referring to hispanic, asians or anyone else. Having read your post, the double standard you have to black people using it as being "ok" is rediculous. If you dont like the word and dont want to be in a group using it, fine but you have to be consistant. Or change your argument from "nobody use the n word" to "if you're not black, dont use the n word". If you are taking a real stand against the hateful use of this word it has to be for all people. If you say its ok for black people to use it because it has a different meaning, you are generalizing that any race other than black people are racists because of its use....? That makes no sense. You are obviously referring to playing with randoms so you dont know if they are white, black, brown, red or yellow so you cant know the intent behind the word. If you hear it, say you arent comfortable with the word and leave it at that.

I don't think being black excuses its use either to be honest. If you want people to refrain from using a word, it should be all people without exempt otherwise you would probably have better luck putting out an oil fire with a dollar store squirt gun filled with alcohol than getting people to stop saying it wether it's as an insult, mimic or jest.
