You've seen the stereotypes. The "GRRL" girl, the "Yeah,-I'm-a-girl,-but-I'll-kick-your-ass" girl, the "celebugamer." While these girls do exist, hey, there're us regular-type girls who play videogames, too. Most of the gamer chicks you see promoting themselves on the internet love attention more than gaming, or are paid to adopt that stereotypical “girl gamer” persona, but what about the rest of us girls – the ones who actually play videogames? We’re stealthily walking among you like ninjas – and man, do we have a lot to hate about gaming.
1. "Well, you don't LOOK like a gamer..."
Why, because I showered? See how stereotypes feel? We’re just as varied as anyone else, but most assume we must be hideously grotesque heifers who lose controllers into the folds of our fat palms like we’re made of coconut-scented quicksand. Unless, of course, we’re wearing Fragdolls T-shirts or Zelda tramp stamps, which is the other acceptable female gamer stereotype.
We don't all wear our love for video games on our sleeves, just like we're sure you don't wear video game novelty shirts every day... right? Right?
2. Honey, we've heard them all before
So you're playing an online game, and you hear yet another prepubescent boy over your headset... but wait, that's no boy! It's a girl! So naturally, you tell her to go back to the kitchen. Funny. Slap yourself on the wrist, you bad, bad boy. Your three seconds of stand-up was only funny the first time, when the other douchebag said it six matchmaking lobbies ago. No one laughed then, either, and no one’s laughing now… probably because you sound fat.
3. We don’t always want to talk about videogames
Great, you met a girl who plays videogames – now you can ALWAYS talk about videogames with her! False. Just because we share a common interest doesn’t mean we don’t have other interests, too, and we know you also have other interests.
Guys love to dumb themselves down to ask us videogame-related questions, just for the novelty of talking to a girl about videogames. We’re not Google, asshole. And don’t condescend, there’s nothing worse. That said…
Just because we’re interested in videogames doesn’t mean we’re interested in you. Once word gets out that there’s a female gamer in the vicinity, guys lose their shit. We’re forced to leave our headsets muted when playing online to avoid the inevitable “So, do you have a boyfriend?” We wanna play the damn game, not hook up with you, k thx. Want a hook-up? Go to…
4. GameCrush
GameCrush enables male gamers to pay to play with attractive female gamers (“PlayDates”). The guys can choose to have their experience be either “flirty” or “dirty.” Ew. This kind of objectification of female gamers just furthers the idea that real female gamers don't exist, or that if they play, they must be ugly.
5. Stupid female character outfits
We realize games are largely based in fantasy, but could character designers get a little more creative with how they clothe their females? Male characters in games get tricked-out armour suits, iconic headgear (Master Chief comes to mind) and outfits that fit their surroundings. Meanwhile, female characters are left with only sashes and a smile.
6. Grrrl Gamers and anything relating to "female gaming empowerment"
Just because we're girls who enjoy spending hours in front of a TV pressing buttons, that does not mean we need to join your community, blog, Facebook group or Twitter-feed-sorority-clustershart of gaming-girl goodness. We like playing games. We are girls. These things don't necessarily need to be tied together, nor do we feel the need to have special treatment because we’re both. And if we happen to want to spend 31 hours perfecting our chopping techniques in Cooking Mama instead of having an equally enjoyable Modern Warfare 2 estrogen-fest against the boys, we shouldn't be considered less of a gamer than you.
(To clarify, everyone is different and not everyone feels this way but nevertheless this'll start a shit storm, this is some points that I personally have been feeling and if people relate then great but in no way am I stating every girl gamer thinks like this.)
If you see me playing be sure to give me a wave :3

1 AntwortenHave you seen the armor on females in halo? This is another stupid feminist wanting to stir up a commotion again.

Finally! Someone is finally thinking rationally on these forums, and that person is is the originator of this (topic? thread? what do you call these things?)! Thank you!

You know what else girl gamers hate? Being good at video games, I do love me some sandwiches though.

1 AntwortenI don't like to label myself a girl gamer... I'm a diehard gamer yes. I'm female... most definitely. I hate being referred to as a girl and most definitely hate all that pink prissy stuff they try to sell me at game store for "girls" blech! As far as the main idea of the post at times male attention from online gaming is a bit too much. I agree on that front. I stayed away from mics and mmos from a long time for that very reason. Then I just said screw it one day, why should I let they mess with my gaming mojo? I was playing video games before most of the little wanna be trash talking "gamers" were born lol. Pre Mario Brothers... Even on Xbox live with no time on mic, or pics, because I have a female avatar I still get hit on about 2 or 3 times a week from random people in game. My fiance and I just laugh about it. You can choose to let them get to you, which is the result that they are looking for, just like with bullying, in which it will continue or escalate or go another route. I choose to laugh it off, ignore it or when I am on mic in caught on a good day I might shoot them down with some funny lines. You never know. Do I still get unwanted attention? Unfortunately? That's what the block feature is for when all else fails. Breathe in and breathe out. Once you leave the game or lobby they are out of your life, which you actually have right ;) Just remind yourself of that and the big picture. Don't let the few ruin the whole experience for the many because there are so many gamers that are not like this post. I know as I have many male gamer friends that are plenty respectful. P.S. Some of us do wear gaming stuff most of the time or talk about it a lot.... I even crochet video game theme hats to wear over my crazy colored anime hair. lol

6 AntwortenI feel you on this one because i'm a girl too! & Most people are cool..but some aren't, like if some guys arent being sexist, they're flirting with me -_-

1 AntwortenBearbeitet von xSHEWULFx: 10/3/2014 11:28:52 PMokay i dont usually write on forums but i just had to comment to this---- i agree with Hyphe aB... i am a female gamer as well and to tell you the truth i like to cook and can joke around if i don't want to hear what they got to say its called a MUTE Button, for all the females that come on here and complain and complain that someone is saying this and someone is saying that.. HELLO MUTE THEM, they are who knows where in the world not like you ever have to talk to them again , and your comment about #3 we don't just want to talk about games, okay well you meet the people you talk to on a game, so wouldn't it be games your talking about, like your bitching cause they make comments but at the same time you don't want them talking about games?? so what do you want them to talk about??" Hows your Cat?" so how are you a gamer??? and your whole Stupid female character outfits sorry but Destiny forum is the worse one to post this because there outfits are the same, they call just as cool on both, as for other games you may want to look in to it a bit more cause there are female developers who actually crate females characters because females want to look sexy in game, sweet heart get with life sex sells male or female knows it... so i have to say i am pretty sure you do not talk for most the female gamers out there because a true female gamer wouldn't care about this crap they would care how good they play and who is playing with them, on this game everyone i play with are guys and they nit pick at each other all the time saying stupid shit, i would feel more left out if they just sat and didn't say nothing to me because they where worried about "omg she might get all mad because i made a joke" ... no matter what you do in game or real life there are scum bags who will say crap about being female but that's the nice thing about games is you don't have to listen to it if you don't want to... but sitting on here complain about it you just looking for attention which in that fact your throwing yourself under the bus... hey Hyphe aB if you read this add me if you want to game sometime, if your on Xbox ONE -- SER3NITIE

Girls could relate better to destiny if the game had guns called the "suros vacuum" or the "vex mythostove". Bungie, are you trying to alienate your girl demography?

5 AntwortenI'm a female. I play video games. I very much do enjoy talking about games. Yes guys, I like to cook so make as many kitchen jokes as you want considering I have a sense of humor. I think this post is being taken way too seriously. Yes I am a female who likes to game, therefore I have to deal with the shit good and bad that comes a long with it. I think ladies who can't, should just walk away till they can cuz that will never change about the gaming world. Guy gamers are smartasses and always will be. Get used to it and be a smart ass back. This being said, I wanna grind on destiny. Hit me up GT: Hyphe aB please no kiddos, your adorable and all but get on my nerves after a bit :) 17+ please and thanks!!

I don't think the source is usually sexism, but rather a superiority complex. Just look at what us white people did a few decades prior. Harassed the crap out of black because they were a minority, they were different, and so they (whites of the time), put them down to make themselves feel up. I think the same applies here. People fear what is different, and ridicule it to try and diminish that fear. Gamer girls are a minority for whatever reason in most cases, and aren't too common for males who are gamers to come across, therefore they are different. And thus, they are harassed. I think all people are like this to a degree, it's just that more people are primitive and more prone to give into these instincts.

2 AntwortenBearbeitet von Hey Scrubs: 12/22/2014 5:01:01 AMGirls can sometimes be better than guys at gaming for some reasons 1) they don't quit as much (personal experience) 2) they have a better since of humor 3) I'll admit it sometimes it's fun to flirt around so what I'm a guy and I'm 20 my testosterone levels are through the roof cut me some slack 4) they are easier to be friends with 5) completely ignoring the stereotype the are less dramatic 6) girls know how to have more fun in games and make the most out of everything. With that said and I mean this in the least creepy way as possible. Girls on Xbox one invite me sometime My gt: Hey Scrubs Games: destiny (most of my time for now) Dragon age inquisition Advanced warfare (if I'm that bored) And open to some suggestions on games to get Girls shouldn't have to be objectify in the video game world and aside from the corny pick up lines I may say to you, you have one male gamer here that is happy to hop on your team or just goof off with.

27 AntwortenAs a fellow girl gamer, I could not agree more with this post. I just want to be treated like the guys are treated. I don't understand why men find it so necessary to say the "go back to the kitchen" stereotyping stuff.

4 AntwortenI remember when my girlfriend was getting shit off some guy. She was getting some prototype vile things said to her but her come back was priceless. She said to the guy " right in the next 30 seconds name 3 people you have slept with in the last six months and your mother, your sister and your dog don't count". The guy had no response and was laffed outa the game I was in tears with laughter brilliant it was. So take note everyone don't piss of the girl gamers or you will be left red faced

1 AntwortenBearbeitet von EnkillEridos: 12/8/2014 8:34:01 AMI am sorry I have to downvote this. For one thing unless your real name is Lizzie Cuevas you just pretty much plagurized a horribly written article on Games Radar named 9 things real female gamers hate about gaming. Found here: http://www.gamesradar.com/9-things-real-female-gamers-hate-about-gaming/ I mean it pretty much looks like this post was copied and pasted from that article. If your name is Lizzie Cuevas. That post was very stereotypical. Cooking Papa? I mean I can cook using a stove. I can cook using recipes, and I can cook more than just mac and cheese and ramen noodles. If you aren't Lizzie Cuevas then disregard that. There are so many things wrong with this. I understand a majority of Bungie games are not on the PC. It seems many console gamers are less mature than PC gamers. While yes in PC gaming the same things happens. Very rarely does the guys in my gaming group "lose their shit when they hear a female." If they truly did my wife who is also in the same gaming group, and does play video games would get hit on as well as our other female members. I am not saying it doesn't happen, and I have no idea what it is like to be a male console gamer. I have never witnessed this kind of thing over open voice comms on a video game. I play three mmo's Second Life, SWTOR, and EVE Online. There are a lot of women that play second life, when you hear their voice it's like hi other person. Same thing with SWTOR. EVE Online I am afraid of everyone there. Making a female feel uncomfortable there, usually brings the wrath of a corporation or alliance. Also a lot of married couples play that game. It is a game where you can literally lose everything you play with. Saying the wrong thing to the wrong person will usually make it so you do lose everything. So it is just better to be quiet in that game to be honest. As far as steam matchmaking, I have never brought people into team speak from a steam match made game never once have I had to kick someone for hitting on a woman, or doing anything in this post. I am not saying it doesn't happen, but it seems to be happening less (if at all) with PC games. Actually I play with more women than men on steam. As far as not always wanting to talk about video games? WTF should we talk to you about? More than likely we are talking because we are playing a video game together. In my case we wouldn't really be talking if we didn't. (Most women and men find me weird and creepy. Most women do not find me attractive at all.) Most gamer groups talk about video games a lot. Specifically the game we are playing if we are playing together. I understand most women think men should only speak to them when spoken to. But when you are playing a game like COD, Left 4 Dead, most mmos, etc. that requires teamwork to actually win. You are going to have to talk about that video game while you are playing it. If they enjoy playing with you they will talk about other video games. Males do this to males too. They are not singling you out just to talk to you. If we talk to you like we would talk to the male gamers, then we are practicing equality. I agree with you about avatars. I want to my male characters to have nothing but a loin cloth and a smile. I think it is ridiculous that a male character on most games do not have scantily equipment options. I find this very sexist. I am not attracted to men, but it is something I always felt was lacking in video games. Options for men to be as revealing as women are in most games is something I would like to see. Most men play games to have fun, most male PC gamers as a sterotype and seems to be the rule are married men with beards. Our wives would flip shit if we actually tried to hit on you. Not speaking about the other clowns, but when I specifically ask a woman in a video game if they have a boyfriend/girlfriend. Get over yourself, I am not hitting on you. I am trying to get you to recruit your boyfriend/girlfriend the more the merrier right? Now back to Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and waiting for Destiny to be released for the PC. (Probably will never happen.)

Bearbeitet von Auttumnnnn: 12/22/2014 10:21:46 AMThere are two types of people in this world: The idiots, and the minority. Attention-seeking "girl gamers" and the guys who make a big deal when they see them are among the idiots.

Hilarious rant. A lot of this is true. "hey look a girl!!!!"" "Wanna be my frieeeennnnd?!"

Who honestly cares? Why are they considered different from guy gamers? They have boobs and a vagina... WHO CARES?!? Unless they are using them against you then simply shut up and play!

4 AntwortenThank you for this post. Its really sad that gender matters so much. Everytime I get into a new clan that I know I will probably be with for a while, I always feel the need to explain to them that I care about my contribution to the team and my own performance. I take it seriously because I strive to be the best that I can. I know its just a video game, but its what I spend a lot of my time doing. But probably out of all the points you made what really frustrates me the most is when guys try to give me special treatment because "im a girl." Big -blam!-ing deal, so what. If I am performing badly, -blam!-ing tell me just like you would with another teammates to get my st*t together. If I get a kill in crucible there is no need for celebration. Some guys are really lame like that. I dont know, ugh, writing this reply is probably stupid because shit will never change. It really sucks that nightfalls and weekly's are nearly impossible to solo anymore. Have a goodnight everyone

Bump, this is way too true, just cuz you're a girl doesn't mean you need to be verbally assaulted in every cod lobby.
