Max Rank Questions and Concerns

I've been reading up on what the max rank in Destiny is going to be, and I've heard from several various sources that the max rank "could be reached in several hours" of gameplay. I have heard numbers like 20 is the max but I've seen ranks in videos that reach as high as 29. I can understand the intent of making the max rank cap so low and obtainable - so that new players can play with their higher level friends quicker - but, the question presents itself - what is the max rank? Thanks for the help

You gain experience until level 20. If you gain experience after that, you get a Mote of Light (an currency, like gold in other games) that only certain merchants accept. You cannot gain levels using Experience after you hit 20 (you will just keep getting Motes of Light) All armor has stats on it, like intelligence, strength etc. Some armor has another stat called Light. If you equip armor with the Light stat you gain levels past 20. The more Light you have on your armor the higher level you will be past 20. If you take the armor off, you go back down to level 20. You can try to find better armor that has a bigger Light stat, thus increasing your level further. This has NOTHING to do with the Mote of Light currency above. The purpose of gaining levels past 20 is so you can damage higher level enemies in raids and strike missions. Some enemies will be around level 30, so being stuck at 20 will not allow you to damage them. Currently there is no info on what the maximum amount of "Light" armor can have, or what the maximum level past 20 is, although some speculate it to be around 30. Allow me to explain. The functional cap is 20, but you can rank higher than that. I know that may sound a bit wonky, but I'll try and clear it up. All the max weapon/armor/gear ranks are 20, so you'll never have to be over rank 20 to equip all the gear, weapons, etc. However as you equip higher level gear, and continue to rank up and earn "emotes of light" your rank can increase. It has no functional use past this point, it's sort of a testament to how long you've been playing and your gear quality. A level 20 player can access and do everything a level 29 player can, he just doesn't have as high a number on his playercard. I think it's kind of a "class" thing past that point....that why I say the "functional cap" is 20. Did I make that a thousand times more confusing than it needed to be? Yup....fantastic. Also, the game isn't out yet, so everything I just said could be changed or 100% false by the time 9/9 comes along. EDIT: Okay so I may have been mistaken on a few accounts....seems like Motes of Light don't effect level and ranks past 20 DO have a functional purpose, allowing you to face higher level enemies....my bad.

      • ....And to follow up, I personally don't think the low level cap is bad. I mean reaching rank 20 is kind of the starting point for the real hardcore stuff. Destiny is a very, very gear centric game. Your armor and weapons determine everything from your looks to your stats. All the armor and weapons in this game (the high level stuff at least) is very unique. Finding the exact specific sets of armor, exotic bits, exotic weapons, etc. is going to probably take up quite a decent amount of time. What's more, is you can continue to improve past rank 20 with subclasses. In fact I'm guessing you can get to rank 20 and not even have your default subclass fully realized...not mention you have two more to rank up and explore. And of course, if you're a sucker for cosmetics, like myself, then that's whole new beast. The speaker up in the tower? He has legendary cosmetic items that you have to be rank 30 to even purchase (well, you only have to be rank 20 to wear like I said below, but it takes 10 motes of light to purchase one legendary cloak/band/mark, you earn one mote of light per level after you reach rank 20, so that's rank 30 before you even start to enter the endgame cosmetic items). And of course there are raids and weekly Nightfall activities to do. And of course last but not least you have three different classes to do everything I just mentioned a total of three times....*deep breath* I'm very sorry if I just blew up your mind or bored you to death.
