A new study suggests that a million or more European Christians were enslaved by Muslims in North Africa between 1530 and 1780 – a far greater number than had ever been estimated before.
Robert Davis
In a new book, Robert Davis, professor of history at Ohio State University, developed a unique methodology to calculate the number of white Christians who were enslaved along Africa’s Barbary Coast, arriving at much higher slave population estimates than any previous studies had found.
Most other accounts of slavery along the Barbary coast didn’t try to estimate the number of slaves, or only looked at the number of slaves in particular cities, Davis said. Most previously estimated slave counts have thus tended to be in the thousands, or at most in the tens of thousands. Davis, by contrast, has calculated that between 1 million and 1.25 million European Christians were captured and forced to work in North Africa from the 16th to 18th centuries.
Davis’s new estimates appear in the book Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800 (Palgrave Macmillan).
Us whites should have our own month since we faced the challenges of slavery for almost 3 centuries. But it won't happen because it undermines the efforts of racist people/organizations like Al Sharpton, NAACP, and Black Panther Party

OP you knuckle head, we already have a white history month. It's called the rest of the year.
-
Humor them
-
White people have White Pride Earth. We run this shit.
-
Op is an idiot
-
You're more than welcome to go to Africa and try to convince them to give you 'a month.'
-
I really don't care since I don't even take any notice of black history month.
-
I'm tired of pride. Enough already. Nobody cares about my ancestors, nobody cares about yours. The end.

Bearbeitet von Ms Blue Phacelia: 12/3/2013 1:45:38 AMWe gave them February. That speaks volumes about whites and how they give blacks the slip. Every time.

3 AntwortenNo race, ethnicity, religion, or any group of people should get their own pride month.

Different groups like to be in environments that reflect their own norms and worldviews; it makes them (us) feel comfortable living with people and institutions that think like they do. For a dominant group in society, the environment where they can enforce their own culture is the society itself-- that's why they're "dominant". So society is most comfortable for that group, since they set its norms and views and prejudices and so forth. And the dominant group obviously institutionalizes its culture and privileges. So minority groups feel a bit left out, and they tend to form separate environments where they can feel comfortable. That is to say, since society and its institutions have been built to favor a single group, other groups try to find their own favorable space. Anyway, back to the infamous month. Unfortunately for the oppressed white man, Black History Week seems to have been created with the state of modern society in mind, where it seemed to some people that Blacks were being underrepresented in society. It was then expanded to a full month and spread outside the US.

Because it's racist if they don't and you're racist for questioning it!
-
Because the only thing I hear my non-white friends complaining about are deeply rooted in stereotypes about their race. I know that no matter what I say after that, I'm pretty much marked as a racist, but I don't dislike other races. At all..

I think op needs to check his privilege.
I'm joking, just in case you were too impaired to realize this.
Why is it always a black vs white thing with some people. While Europeans were enslaved, they weren't enslaved to make the USA, and the USA is the one with the Black History Month. If they want a White History Month to raise awareness about enslaved Europeans, then it should be done in Europe. Also, until recently, there were people alive that were born into American Slavery. (Mary Bittlebrun was born in 1864, during Slavery, and she died in 1976, only 37 years ago) Also, there is no system left in place to keep the former European slaves down. There was an official system in place in the USA until 1965, when it was started to be dismantled, and parts of that legacy still remain in many areas of the country. You complain that Blacks get a memorial month, and that whites don't. Tell me what they need to overcome to deserve one and we'll talk.

5 AntwortenIrish people were enslaved. They don't have one. That white liberal guilt trip shit must get to some people.

And suicide declines with religiosity, but that doesn't mean people are going to talk about it. Face it dude, you'll rarely ever hear the whole story from one source, and most of the world is pretty ignorant.
