The BF-110 or "Zerstorer" (Destroyer in German) was the Luftwaffes most used night fighter. The BF-110 was originally operated as a heavy fighter, it was sought to be used as both a bomber and fighter and be proficient in both roles, however during the Battle of Britain it was shown that the Bf-110 could not tangle with the likes of a spitfire. The Bf-110 did however shine in another role, that of the night fighter, it flew this role from as early as the battle of Britain until the last days of the Reich. This particular model in the picture is a captured BF-110 G-4, that strange thing on the nose is actually the radar apparatus it uses to find targets, specifically bombers. A night fighters role was to, as its name suggests be able to fight at night, they were used mostly against British bombing raids because the RAF bombed Germany by night while the USAF did so by day. The BF-110 was a strange design for a fighter (Probably because Goering designed it :P), it may not have shined in this role, but it did go on until the end of the war as a stable platform as a night fighter!
Edit: Forgot to mention, the G-4 model in that picture was also one of the few Luftwaffe aircraft with remote controlled machine guns on each side of the fuselage for defense, which is pretty freaking awesome.
I was actually inspired to post this because I finally got around to learning to flying the BF-110 in the combat flight simulator IL2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover, it allows you to use it in the night fighter role as well.
Thanks for reading and as always if you like this stuff feel free to follow me!

6 AntwortenSo what was the original idea for the role of a heavy fighter? Did they expect the bigger armament to compensate for it's lack of agility?
