In Roosevelt City, UT, Union High School football coach Matt Labrum took disciplinary action to a new level. After a team loss last Friday, Labrum suspended all 80 members of his team — not for their poor performance on the field, but for a lack of respect outside the stadium that the coach felt was translating into terrible football.
“We looked at it as a chance to say, ‘Hey, we need to focus on some other things that are more important than winning a football game,” Labrum told the Deseret Sun. “We got an emotional response from the boys. I think it really meant something to them… There was none of them that fought us on it.”
This is a pretty big deal considering how often teachers and administration just turn a blind eye to bullying.
This is a pretty big deal considering how often teachers and administration just turn a blind eye to bullying.
And more often sports teams. Especially football. But unfortunately this just sounds like some some kind of desperate reaction because the team sucks.

I read about this this morning. I'm glad the parents aren't just throwing a hissy fit and actually accepting the fact that their kids were not perfect little angels.
-
I'm surprised by the responses here. Normally when we talk about bullying, you guys are like "it's a necessary part of growing up" and "it makes you tougher"

I live in West Jordan (technically Taylorsville), UT, which is about 13 miles out of SLC. Bullying has been a huge deal recently. We've had four or more suicides, in the past year, and are really cracking down. My cousin goes to Union, so I'll definitely ask her about this.

Thats a teacher

That is a big step in the right direction. Unfortunately, you know a school board will make this a rule, and remove the efficacy of the punishment.

4 AntwortenFrom what I read, the majority got suspended for the actions of the minority. Which I personally think is unfair.

He's very wise.

This coach...
Is awsome
-
Now that is a true coach.

The hero we need.

Good, coaches should not allow the players to be bullies or allow bad sportsmanship. In addition to their normal duties, of course. If you can't control yourself off the field, you shouldn't be allowed on the field.
-
Good for him, but it seems like most football teams would get suspended if every coach did this.
-
More coaches should be this way.

3 AntwortenI think everyone can agree that that Coach did a good thing.

Bleeeee will sit on the bullies.
-
Damn, I did not expect that. Mad respect for that coach.
-
I think this a good thing. Bullying is often ignored by teachers and other staff members of school, it needs to be taken more seriously.
-
I approve. No one should get special treatment in classes unless they are physically/mentally handicapped.
-
F*** yeah.
-
+1 for that coach.
-
Good. If you can't respect your peers and act in a decent fashion, you shouldn't play.
-
Good coach. Usually they only care about the game, and winning.
