Alright, as some of you have undoubtedly seen the news, Microsoft has gone back on their DRM standpoint. Let me preface this by saying: no matter what people do, someone will have a complaint. Allow me to chime in mine:
On the surface, this looks great. Just like how, on the surface, everything we knew about the X1 before looked "terrible." Digging around, we found that the previous plan for the X1 wasn't actually all that bad. In fact, it was impressively innovative. I was excited (and still am, don't get me wrong).
But what does this mean? Well, the big-wigs at Microsoft, in catering to the will of the whiners have retracted a gem, something they could have used as a huge selling-point for the X1. No more. What's gone? Family Sharing.
Now, what is Family Sharing? For people with a clue, instead of those mindlessly bitching about the X1 being incredibly restrictive (some of which was true, but there was a reason for it), we noticed that Microsoft gave us the opportunity to share our games with 10 friends for free. Doesn't matter where they are, they have access to your whole library. And you've got access to theirs, a wealth of games you don't have to purchase yourself, nor drive three states away to borrow from your old roommate.
But that's gone now. Because we couldn't evolve. We couldn't accept the terms and conditions. We refused to sign into LIVE once in a while. We had an issue with giving up the rights to owning a game when we sold it away. We wanted our physical discs to matter.
That's great guys. I'm really proud for our initiative to maintain the status quo, when the future was within our grasp.
Sure, they'll probably bring it back, but it'll be a while.
Are we proud?

I don;'t care what stupid word people use to label others. It's a great thing MS is doing this. I could play my games offline again which is great I have no reason to buy the console now but I can put it back on my list for if/when they get an exclusive I care about.
-
3 AntwortenThe entire community wanted the online thing gone, and Microsoft just said 'fine but -blam!- you while we're at it.' That sucks. I'm posting this in multiple places because I sincerely hope this becomes the internet's new 'primary way of thinking': Internet, we need to get MS to either do or tell us why it's impossible to require the disk for games bought with the disk and require the 'once in 24 hours log on' thing ONLY for games bought with your digital library. Doing so would mean we could keep the family plan and offline gamers could still play. Microsoft can still pave the way for the future and Microsoft can take back their giant '-blam!- you guys' they gave to offline and many foreign players throughout the world. MS... plz staph.

1 AntwortenI hope this doesn't interfere with cloud-based computing.
-
2 AntwortenI don't get why Family Sharing was such a big thing in the first place? 80% of gamers play games from 6 AM to 8 PM. 10 people trying to share one game in that period when half of them are hardcore gamers? Yeah I doubt that would have worked.

no. i was fine with the old conditions.

2 AntwortenI realise I may be the embodiment of the ruin of mankind to you, but I'm indeed happy about the decisions made. That's just how it is. It sucks for people excited by the new features but I personally think the traditional ways are better and so I'm cool with this. You cannot please everyone, no matter what happens.

1 Antworten
Are we proud?
Why do people talk like the community is some kind of shared consciousness? Why not just complain back and try to revert things? You seem pretty convinced of its power. Bearbeitet von PrimeGhost: 6/19/2013 10:10:18 PMI'm hoping all this change only applies to the physical copies. If we buy our games digitally we could still have access to the Family Share plan and the seamless switching. Think about it, digital downloads are stored on your HDD whereas physical copies cannot be anymore. This removes the possibility of cloud storage for physical copies, not digital ones.

4 AntwortenI for one am furious. I hope the hardcore crowd is proud of themselves for dooming the console industry in the same way professional photography doomed the camera industry. Kodak, Nikon, and Canon might have been able to save themselves if they had innovated more with the advances of social media, Internet sharing, and other technologies. But cell phone makers and websites like Instagram beat them to it and now professional cameras are almost relics; hipster tweenagers can compete with professional photographers where once only the professionals could afford the equipment to make good photographs and be paid for the trouble. It is now identical to gaming. Hardcore gamers demand a "games-only" console while cheaper and more capable smartphones, tablets, and PCs are rising to the challenge. Consoles will become rarer as they become more expensive while catering to a fringe audience instead of opening themselves up to a wider market. As technology and sales for smartphones, tablets, and PCs grow only more rapidly, consoles will be left in the dust. The hardcore-casual war is over, and the casuals have won because the hardcore players gutted themselves on their own selfish desires. Good going gamers. PC master race.

Yep fairly proud.

I'm kinda indifferent about the whole thing. It didn't really bother me before and it doesn't bother me now. What really impressed me is the fact Microsoft actually listened and changed. It was a pretty significant change too. That alone sells me on the Xbone (even though I already preordered).
-
9 AntwortenYou're naive if you think "whiners" caused this to happen. MS took one look at the pre-order data and realized "oh shit, they're not going for this shit. Quitely fire don mattrick. We need to pull a 180.)
-
6 AntwortenYou realize you can just lend the game to a family member now right? The options with the DRM were extremely limiting and now everything is better. You act like the system would have worked at all when really it was overly complicated and wouldn't have been as easy as you think.
-
3 AntwortenHey, asshole, only two people per "family" could play a game at one time. So if you were thinking of "This is great only one of us buys COD and we all play and have a blast!" that's not how it was going to work. Hell, Major Nelson even said in Angry Joe's interview "you're not buying a game for ten people". Absolutely I'm proud that we got all this bullshit removed.
-
At firsts I was a little mad how the Xbox One was going, then I researched and I was actually looking forward to the benefits (10 member family sharing plan, switch games seamlessly, disc-less gameplay). But now I'm sort of made they backtracked instead of compromising.
-
16 AntwortenWhat... If this gets rid of my ability to take my games anywhere via the Cloud, I am going to punch someone...
-
6 AntwortenYay now next gen = Current gen with better graphics. =_= i was really excited for the family sharing to.
-
2 AntwortenAlso, we have to have disc based games in the GODDAMN TRAY! I was looking forward to installing and switching my games. GG babies.
-
This -blam!-ing blows. It's like we went ass backwards in time to 2005. Wow, just -blam!-ing wow.
-
1 AntwortenWhat do you think the chances of an opt-out system are? In order to be able to use family sharing and to dowload the game from the disk you have to consent to 24 hour check-ins? I know it's probably pretty low, but one can hope.
-
6 AntwortenI have not read that the sharing plans is being removed. They didn't go into that much detail from what I read. Im not saying it will still be in, and I do believe they will remove it with this change. But until I hear it from them, stating that sharing is a no go, then maybe there is a hint of hope.
-
3 AntwortenI doubt it was the complaining but rather the preorder numbers. If sales are good then they wouldn't change a thing.
-
I don't care.
-
1 AntwortenMaybe one day we will have it that way. But today, the Internet caused MS to cave.
-
God, is this what all you wanted? It's a freaking specs upgrade now. The family sharing was like best aspect of the Xbox One.
