War on drugs?
Ok, so everybody knows how this dance goes. Drugs are made illegal, people use them, some die, some get messed up, some get away, some new people get introduced to it, rinse and repeat. I myself feel Weed should be legalized, but in this conversation I'd like to avoid Weed discussion. Instead I have a spitball idea of the hardcore stuff.
Instead of outlawing it, put age restrictions on it and sell it to people. However to purchase all you need do is register. Now the thing is, it is your choice. If you are messed up on these drugs or you do something illegal to acquire more, then that is where punishment comes in.
I haven't come up with exact levels or ideas of what would be appropriate, but to get an idea of how much trouble you would be in, say level 1 is least and 5 is worst.
1. Using without registration
2. Committing a crime while on one of the drugs
3. Allowing or supplying minors with said narcotics
4. Committing unspeakable acts against another person while on drugs
So basically this is in a world where we do have the funding for this sort of thing. If you want out of the drugs you are offered free rehab or if you go to jail you would get a form of rehab.
Now there are pros and cons to this. Some are heavy, some are light. What I'm looking for is a discussion. Is this a good idea, is it terrible? Do you have something to add or is there something you would remove from this idea. The floor is open

4 AntwortenMy plan would be to legalize all drugs. tax it, profit. Marijuana would be legal to sell to anyone over 14 All other drugs 18. 14-18 could be allowed to do other drugs if their legal guardian allows it.

2 AntwortenI would be worried about the highly addictive nature of "hard drugs". I'm all about the personal responsibility, but addiction can take away self-control. And considering what that can do to addicts and the people around them, I dunno if legalization is something I would support.

15 AntwortenIf you legalize drugs, drug cartels will go away. Some Columbian gangster isn't going to compete with American industry producing the crop here and selling it in a safe, regulated environment. Tell me why if you want some cocaine would you go down to Jerome on the West side in a bad neighborhood, risking getting robbed and shot, all for an unregulated, untested product when you could drive down to a store in a safer area and buy from a registered dealer that you know their product is going to be clean and you won't get jacked by the cashier? Same argument for prostitution. Legalizing all but drives most prostitutes off the streets. No one is going to pay $50 for half and half from a strung out crack whore who probably has AIDS when they can go to a brothel and know they are getting a clean girl, even if they have to pay double or triple.

The problem with legalising drugs is that the warlords who currently control the supply of things like cocaine and heroine aren't just going to go away. You have to get rid of them before you can control the supply and that's obviously easier said than done. I'd also recommend people read up on "The Great Binge" before saying legalisation is the best way forward. Obviously the OP isn't talking about putting heroin in cough syrup but it's the last example of what happened to society when hard drugs were readily available.

As someone who has been on oxycodone, morphine intravenously, percocets, and oxybutynin to name a few prescription things I have been on, I say we legalize everything and let Darwin's theories reign supreme.

2 AntwortenThe problem with hardcore drugs is that they are way more addictive than other substances. They've destroyed a lot of lives and a lot of families. And rehab is a long and difficult process already. Even with regulated sale of these drugs, I can't see how it would reduce addiction and drug related crime. Also, in your system, I'd put #2 a lot higher up. Supplying hard drugs to minors should carry a very strong penalty.

9 AntwortenI think it sends the wrong message to people to legalize drugs like that. "It's okay to kill yourself." It's illegal to attempt suicide, so why are hardcore drugs any different?

Just legalize all drugs and prostitution already. Prohibition causes far more harm and doesn't stop anyone, it only makes drugs more potent and available to children. We learned from alcohol prohibition, now why are we still infringing wasting loads of money and resources, denying helpful resources and infringing on freedoms still?
