A 17-year-old Canadian girl died Sunday following a suicide attempt last week. The family of Rehtaeh Parsons said that their daughter never recovered from an alleged -blam!- by four teenage boys in November 2011 that left her deeply depressed and rejected by her community.
Placed on life support last Thursday at a local hospital, Rehtaeh Parsons died on April 7 after her family made the decision to take her off the life support.
In a Facebook memorial page, the girl's mother, Leah Parsons, wrote that Rehtaeh had been shunned and harassed after one of the boys allegedly involved in the -blam!- took a picture of the incident and distributed it to their "school and community, where it quickly went viral."
"Rehtaeh is gone today because of the four boys that thought that -blam!- a 15-year-old girl was okay, and to distribute a photo to ruin her spirit and reputation would be fun," Parsons wrote.
According to Canadian news outlet CBC, the alleged sexual assault happened at a small gathering at which teenagers consumed alcohol. One of the boys in attendance reportedly took a photo of another boy having sex with Rehtaeh Parsons and sent it to friends.
Gawker writes that the bullying got so bad after the photo circulated that the family was forced to relocate.
"She was never left alone. She had to leave the community. Her friends turned against her. People harassed her. Boys she didn't know started texting her and Facebooking her asking her to have sex with them. It just never stopped," Leah Parsons told the CBC.
Canada's Chronicle Herald reports that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police completed a yearlong criminal investigation of the sexual assault, but "there was insufficient evidence to lay charges." A police spokesman told the newspaper that authorities are now "investigating a sudden death involving a young person."
In an interview on CBC Radio program "Maritime Noon," Leah Parsons said that the family was "devastated" when they learned criminal charges would not be filed.
"[The police] said that they would go talk to them and that [the boys] realized what they did was wrong, but [there was] nothing they could do, criminally," Parsons said. "It was a slap in the face."
Although Rehtaeh was a 15-year-old minor at the time of the alleged -blam!-, "because she was on the cusp of not being underage" prosecutors thought the accused could claim that they did not know she was under the age of consent, Parsons told Maritime Noon. According to Parsons, the four boys accused of -blam!- were younger than 18 at the time of the incident.
As described by Parsons, the shaming and harassment stemming from the incident had long-lasting psychological and emotional effects on her daughter. Parsons also told Maritime Noon that Rehtaeh suffered from depression and had checked herself into a hospital after having suicidal thoughts last March. A Twitter account that appears to have belonged to Parsons features references to drug culture, as well as what appears to be drug paraphernalia.
1 AntwortenWow she's weak. This is just natural selection at work.
-
1 AntwortenYea I knew a girl who got -blam!- she was actually really close to me and she also tells me its a slap in the face when you take them to court and they get off cause there is no evidence.

Human...
-
32 AntwortenThe amount of victim-blaming going on in this thread is absolutely disgusting.
-
Reminds me of the paparazzi.
-
The worst part is that those... Pigs are getting away with this.
-
2 AntwortenThat is terrible, but I still don't understand how that could lead someone to suicide. She had her whole life ahead of her. Then again, I've never been ra/ped...
-
2 Antwortenitt: some people are laughing about a girls suicide -blam!- isn't good, kay? If it were turned around, that would make the situation much more awkward. inb4 doesntmatterhadsex In all seriousness: The four boys should be tried as adults, not as juvis.
-
4 AntwortenHer fault, I will not feel sorry for some dumb teenager.
-
Sad to hear. Don't know what makes me sadder, hearing that someone was killed in cold blood or that someone threw their life away. Remember, there is never a reason for suicide, life can ALWAYS get better... unless you're dead. That said, I'm disgusted not only that she was -blam!-, but that all her friends would turn on her over something like that.
-
You know the "It wasn't ra/pe she's just a slut" is the exact attitude what most likely caused this suicide.
-
24 AntwortenHAHA! What an idiot for committing suicide. These guys should be imprisoned for life though.

-10 faith in humanity current faith level: 90 Also, ITT hormonal edgy victim blaming teens thinking theyre rebels

So much anger itt.

3 AntwortenIf there was no evidence to condemn the people as rapists, then we shouldn't go on saying that she was sexually assaulted. What most likely happened was that there was a small party going on involving drinking alcohol far beyond their limits, she lost her inhibitions and the sex was not non-consensual (despite being underaged, most likely along with the other people involved.) This in itself isn't that bad, this kind of stuff happens quite a lot. However, taking the photo was quite wrong, again, not THAT bad, distributing it was a problem. However, what really shocks me is how society attacked her like that.
-
What she did wrong. She drank underage, without the supervision of someone responsible. She let them get to her.
-
1 AntwortenI honestly believe -blam!- should be punishable by death. And not injection, either. Give them the chair.
-
Where do people get this attitude? Nobody deserves to be -blam!-, when someone says no, it means no. Even if she was totally naked/drunk or whatever.

Bearbeitet von Charlemagne: 4/10/2013 1:35:57 AMRa/pe is ra/pe, no matter what. I will treat ra/pists as the filth that they are, and I don't discriminate on race, religion, creed, class, age, sex, or gender. Ra/pe is wrong and ra/pists should stop breathing our air, they are pathetic and ignorant.
-
Well that's depressing.
-
Boo hoo.
-
14 AntwortenSee some of these recent "ra/pe" instances could be more of the girl just being a slut. I mean how do you get yourself setup with 4 guys. Something normally doesnt feel right before you get in a situation like that. But regardless it could go either way.

1 Antworten
A 17-year-old Canadian girl died Sunday following a suicide attempt
How do you die from attempted suicide? You either succeed and it's suicide or you fail and it's attempted suicide.

What's with the new trend of under age girls getting hammered at parties then getting "-blam!-"? If woman are so worried about being -blam!- maybe they shouldn't go to parties with teenage boys who are taking alcohol (which is know to lead to bad decisions) and getting so drunk themselves they pass out. Not saying that what the boys did is right either but girls seem to be putting themselves in shitty situations then point fingers when things go sour. It's not like india where every woman is oppressed and men rule with an iron fist and -blam!- woman in the streets. The boys should definitely be punished for distributing the pics though. They did that while sober and should be held accountable.
-
Can rapists be given life sentences? If not, what the -blam!-.
