Need some computer help. FPS while gaming is sub-par.

Before I say anything else, here are the specs of my rig. - Intel Core i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz - 4GB RAM - Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M Yes, my rig's a laptop. The ASUS G53S model to be exact. Only came with 4GB RAM though. My deepest apologies. Whenever I play Sleeping Dogs on max settings, everything seems so slow. I've also tired running Far Cry 3 and I could get around 25 FPS at tops at max settings. I've asked a colleague of mine if I can do anything to remedy the low FPS rate and he said I should overclock my rig. Problem is, I am not quite familiar with this "overclock" thing. I do know that it pushes your hardware to its factory designated limit, but beyond that, i do not know anything else about overclocking. Should I attempt to do it? How do you do it? Also, whenever I use an Xbox 360 wired controller, the FPS is noticeably stable for Sleeping Dogs. (Not at max settings though. Just more stable when I run medium while using my keyboard and mouse.) I also tried running Borderlands 2 and Dead Space 1 and the frame rates have improved... Weird. Do my specs just suck? I have a 4GB RAM yet to install and I was wondering if it would help boost my rig's performance.

Simple, dont run the games on max settings. Your GPU isnt strong enough to handle those games. Lower it down to medium/high settings for better FPS. If you're insistent on keeping Max setting, try lowering you aliasing filters. I find that helps a lot.

  • To answer your question it has to do with your GPU not being good enough. As for overclocking that is typically locked on laptops. Though you could try it at least for your GPU since that might be able to be overclocked, but I would advise against it since cooling is always an issue in laptops and you are either asking to kill your laptop or cause a fire imo. As for the CPU you can't overclock that. So in other words play the game on a lower setting or deal with the low FPS. Also more RAM won't help you.

I can't run FarCry 3 maxed on an i5-2500k @ 4.4GHz and a GTX 560ti Of course, I had a second monitor running with a video chat going, but still... also, using the "@" symbol just makes "at"

      • Well, it should be presumed that because you're running on a laptop that you're not going to be able to max out every modern game with desirable results. Your hardware isn't particularly "bad", but that they are the mobile versions and have more limits than their desktop counterparts. I personally wouldn't worry too much about them unless you must max everything out to enjoy a game (and in that case, a desktop would be more ideal). Also, I wouldn't really overclock your hardware in a laptop. Laptops are more compact and there is less cooling overall due to limited airflow. I'd only overclock if you are certain you can keep the temperatures lower, but it also depends on your motherboard for overclocking so a laptop most likely doesn't allow much overclocking, if at all. The CPU and GPU are probably also locked into their settings anyhow. For why your performance is different in different games is that each use a different engine (at least in your case), and so I wouldn't take that as indicator for performance issues other than some games require more powerful hardware to max out. Finally, upgrading your RAM will not result in a noticeable performance boost in your case. 4 GB is more than most applications will even touch. VRAM is more important in this case for games, but your GPU is probably limited to 1-2GB.

        • Do not overclock a laptop

        • You might want to stay playing on Medium settings for Far Cry 3/Sleeping Dogs. The mobile version of desktop GPU's are sub par compared to their desktop counterpart. And, adding RAM won't help.
