The proposal, which comes at the end of a month-long review process spearheaded by Vice President Joe Biden, is broken down into four key subsections: law enforcement, the availability of dangerous firearms and ammunition, school safety and mental health.
In an effort to touch on all four of those elements, the president recommended requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales; reinstating the assault weapons ban; restoring a 10-round limit on ammunition magazines; eliminating armor-piercing bullets; providing mental health services in schools; allocating funds to hire more police officers; and instituting a federal gun trafficking statute, among other policies. The cost of the package, senior officials estimated, would be roughly $500 million, some of which could come from already budgeted funds.
Because these recommendations require congressional approval, the administration is supplementing its proposal with 23 executive actions that will be taken immediately. Those actions include requiring federal agencies to hand over relevant data for a background check system; providing law enforcement officials, first responders and school officials with better training for active shooting situations; directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence; and many more.
I wish that Obama's proposal focused more on mental health and allotted more money towards identifying and treating people who are dangerous. I think that preventing an event that is as unlikely and unpredictable as a mass shooting is nearly impossible no matter what measures are implemented. But if this plan prevents any violence at all, I think it will be worth it.
I also think it will be interesting to see the results of the court cases that will undoubtedly come from these measures. I want to see the courts expand and further clarify the power that the government can take on gun control.

16 Antworten"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Any law that infringes on our rights as guaranteed by the Constitution is unlawful and we are not required to follow it by law.

Scary that you people live in a country where it's necessary for school teachers to know what to do in a situation of gun violence.
-
1 AntwortenI think the only thing needed is a background check and maybe a mental health test of sorts. The problem is that it's easier to get a gun here than it is to get a driver's licsense. People have every right to own a gun, yes. But, the transaction involved in getting a firearm needs to be a little more complex for other people's saftey. I realize people can get a gun outside of retail suppliers if they really want to, but if there were test to ensure the sale would be safe then at least people couldn't blame it on the retailer or government. /rant

This isn't really focusing on the real problem of American gun control, which is the mass proliferation and use of small arms weapons such as handguns and revolvers. AKs aren't used nearly as much as Glocks in America for crimes.

To be fair apart from the background checks I don't think the changes will do all that much. The ten round limit especially. The shooter can just go in with two guns now instead.

1 Antworten
I wish that Obama's proposal focused more on mental health
Except it does. Go read the actual text of the proposed executive orders.

19 AntwortenObama supports the rebels of other countries by giving them military weapons, but won't allow his own country to have just weapons alone. Seems legit and smart, right?

I actually agree with most of those ideas, other than the assault weapons ban, since its a vague term, and the gun trafficking one, because I don't know what exactly that means.

Bearbeitet von realdomdom: 1/17/2013 9:34:01 AMJust a side note: It's quite shocking to see, that people are still enraged about how they wouldn't be able to own/use military grade weapons. Way to go, paranoia. "As long as fear still exists, love hasn't reached it's goal yet."

I think the only thing they should focus on right now is care for the mentally unstable.

5 AntwortenHonestly, I am a little confused about this one:
16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
If my physician asks me that, I won't answer at all.

1 AntwortenThis sounds like a very positive step as far as I'm concerned. The US has way too many guns in the hands of civilians and us non-US people think its absolutely crazy.
-
I agree, I think we need to put more money into our mental healthcare. The average hunter/gun owner isn't committing these mass shootings. By making guns harder to get, you're only prolonging the process in which these psychos obtain weapons. Considering many of them aren't stupid, and haven't committed crimes previous to this, it would be really hard to prevent them to get a gun. This isn't going to help. This is only going to increase government control. It's doing little more than masking the symptoms while forgetting the syndrome.

A political Flamewar, now this place is starting to feel like home.

5 AntwortenHonestly, nothing he has signed into executive order will have any impact on gun violence.
-
I'd really like someone to create a Mjolnir type suit to say LOL NO to the gun people who think they can take on the US government.
-
10 AntwortenI don't understand why people are concerned with how scary the weapon looks, how many rounds it can carry in a magazine and what kind of bullets it's firing. If any of these factors are in play, we've already failed. The focus should be on mental health, background checks, mental health, more police and mental health.

9 AntwortenBearbeitet von Chizishere: 1/16/2013 11:04:07 PMNo more spending. You want a plan? Here you go: Less gun-free zones. Allow people to carry guns in more places so when a problem arises it can be ended quickly with less loss of life. This plan requires virtually no spending (bonus perk). People like to forget how the Connecticut killer was NOT able to purchase a gun...He did not obtain his weapon legally, he stole it from his mother. The gun laws WORKED, therefore further bans/restrictions are unnecessary.
