I was one of the many people who said I'd never buy Marathon since it killed Destiny, but I played the server slam and enjoyed it. Since there's been so much... discourse... about marathon online I decided to actually check and see what people were saying.
Apparently the majority of complaints are about TTK, tutorial, the art style, and the UI. At least from what I've seen.
The TTK is perfectly fine as it is. If it were increased it would end up being miserable to play since every fight with another person would be a drawn out ordeal. Playing marathon now I feel like if I don't sneak around I'm dead, and it's honestly super fun. I guess for those who like running and gunning it sucks, but there are infinite other games like that.
If you didn't know how to play after the tutorial that's solidly on you. I don't understand how anyone would have trouble understanding how to play. It's really not complicated. Read mod descriptions in the vault. Look at what resources have what icons. I guess it doesn't have big yellow arrows pointing at what to pick up, but geeze.
EDIT: I realized after posting that mods and resources aren't covered in the tutorial. But the thing is, you don't need to know about either to survive.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to the art style. I like how bizarre it is. Not many things in the past few (20) years have really been bizarre so it's refreshing. I love the trippy loading screen and loud colors. It's not for everyone though, I get that.
Never once had trouble with UI. I believe people are complaining to complain about that one. It's not even slightly confusing.
Everyone else seemed to be preaching to the void so I threw my hat in as well. I do worry about the game after everyone gets purple shields and good guns though. It's just going to be like trials on a 9 win streak while in the last round and tied.
I think adding a dedicated arena mode with respawns would massively help. It could be like the lockdown effect but in reverse so you have a small arena. The maps are already there and the ability to isolate sections of maps exist already. Just slap a respawn mechanic in there and give everyone in the match the same gun with better weapons being pickups.
It will be what it will be though. I'm gonna get back to finding more logs about edible worm nests and drinkable cheeseburgers before "the servers shutdown forever in May".
Please don't change the TTK Bungie. Also make a dedicated board on here, -blam!- discord.

1 AntwortenThe little time I've had with the game it seems promising. Unfortunately, that holds no weight since it's now considered "cool" to dump on things just because. How society ended up this way I don't know for sure, but I blame social media.

It’s rare and good to enjoy something entertaining. Probably should play every video game you enjoy playing without giving a -blam!- if the internet thinks you’re wrong.

Bearbeitet von Dooodley: 3/10/2026 9:03:57 PMI havent played it myself but from what I can tell from watching others play it doesnt seem like a bad game. It does seem very niche though - that's why I'm personally not playing it - which, IMO, makes it a really weird business decision. I wish it had a pure PvE mode because I actually like the art style and the weapons seem cool. And the gunplay is obviously going to be good if it's a Bungie game. If they had announced a future and not too distant PvE mode I probably would picked it up today and played some of the normal version too.

1 AntwortenIt's wild the difference in opinions between my friends and people online. We are all completely transfixed by this game's loop and have been playing all weekend since launch. Then I come online here / see YT videos on its Steam population and that it's a failure. IDK I don't get it. It's such a fun game (and this is coming from someone with absolutely zero experience / previous interest in extraction shooters).

It pains me to say this but I am enjoying it..

Bearbeitet von jhermannITJ: 3/8/2026 3:41:48 AMIt's good/great. Might be the start of something special, imo. Feels like it. Feels like when I first played the Witcher 2. Or Titanfall... RiP (So there's no guarantees). Bioshock. Fallout New Vegas Marvel vs Capcom Marathon feels special to me. 😇👍💠 I'm not trying to tilt anyone, but it feels like the evolution for Destiny I always wanted.

To each their own, glad to hear you’re having fun.

Glad to hear it. I enjoyed my time in the server slam as well, and am looking forward to playing it soon. (I've been busy)
