So, today my girlfriend and I wanted to play Destiny 2. I was excited because I spent many hours playing it back in 2020–2022. I played on PS4 at that time, so when I read before installing the game again that it had cross save, I was even more excited. But that excitement was very short-lived. When I started the game, I was greeted with the “enable cross save” screen. I began the process and logged in with my PlayStation account, believing I could then link my Steam account to it. It failed. I was able to link my Steam account (at least I think so, because the companion app says it’s linked, while one Chrome tab does not and another one does, even though I refreshed everything multiple times). However, it simply refuses to authenticate my Steam account in the first step of the cross-save process. After the authentication step and choosing my Steam account (I only have one, and yes, I am sure I’m logged in with the correct one on my PC. It showed me the correct account to link, and I was already logged into that exact account on my PC), I usually either get redirected to a 404 page or receive a linking error. The error says: “The account being verified is not linked to the account you are currently logged in with. Please try again with your account linked for this platform.” I am aware that this normally means the wrong account is being used. What makes this confusing is that the account name shown as “linked” does not match my Steam account name. However, as mentioned before, it only ever showed me one Steam account to choose from, which I did select, and that account should be the correct one. Funny enough, my Epic Games account, which I barely ever use, worked perfectly on the first try. After hours of searching for a solution here, this has honestly exhausted me to the point where I’m now writing this post and probably will never touch this game again. This whole “you can’t unlink an account” situation just made everything even worse. I just wanted to play the game. Thanks for the help in advance (hopefully).
