The new D&D movie is alright.
I don’t know much about D&D, nor did I see any of the trailers beforehand, one of my mates decided that we were all going to watch it and so we did.
It’s nothing special, but honestly with no expectations going in I enjoyed it a lot more than any of the recent blockbuster CGI-fests I’ve seen. It feels like a less tired Marvel film but with magic. The jokes were hit and miss (when they hit, they hit hard though), and Richard E Grant felt out of place for most of the first half.

It's not the movie's fault though, I am not the audience for it and I knew that going in to watching it. 5th Edition has really done a lot to D&D, in that it has made it very popular and this "memey and zany" party dynamic is the image that the kinds of people who will self describe themselves as part of "geek culture" have given it. It's a film for them. Personally, I prefer my D&D sessions to tonally be more like Conan the Barbarian.

As a longtime DnD nerd, it is officially; pretty good. [spoiler]There are some cool little references , and they got all the info right, like the Red Wizards of They. If you aren’t into DnD at all, its still a pretty good movie. I wish they had a beholder in it (they teased one in the credits which made me mad), has sequel potential. Cool little easter egg with the 80’s tv show characters in the contest part. Thought the barbarian chick having a thing for halflings was funny.[/spoiler] It’s just my opinion, but you should probably see it for Chris Pine.
