FOMO = Reason to Play the Game

Obviously the new thing is to scream and cry about Bungie exploiting the "Fear of Missing Out" (FOMO) unfairly to get players to play the game. The complaint is usually aimed at the timed content and hit a new high when I saw a post saying that Iron Banner was too short and exploited FOMO. Sure, you might have a fear of missing out. Looked at from the other direction though what you have is a desire to play the game or a reason to log in or a "reason to play the game". Destiny is an ongoing title meant to be played for weeks and months and years. In order to make that fun they have to provide new content that gives people a reason to log in over time. The only possible way to do this is to have new things come and go so that things are changing. If everything is just there and never leaves then everything is just the same and nothing is new. For my money this strategy is great. I'm a fairly casual player and it's great that there's something new going on basically every week. It's not always huge something new but it keeps things interesting. Sure, might I miss some things when I go on vacation or whatever? Yeah, but who cares because there's always new stuff coming. The only other way to be constantly providing something new without having some things come and go is for Bungie to make an ungodly and impossible amount of content. Like literally new content every week that never goes away. That's completely bonkers and impossible. Just remember that what you're really saying when you complain about the FOMO is that Bungie is providing reasons to play the game. Which, in the end, isn't a bad thing.

You say that, but this new season system gives me absolutely zero reasons to play, and every time I do play I just find myself bored. The activities in these seasons are boring and tedious, obviously designed to be thrown away after a short amount of time. The only reason to even consider buying a season is the loot, but bungie said at one point that the loot can eventually be earned after the season is concluded. So really there’s no reason to buy them unless you like shallow activities that were, again, designed to be thrown away. Meaning that there’s no good reason to play. The only way I can see these seasons giving players a reason to play, is if those players are highly addicted to destiny and don’t want to miss out on anything. Of course it’s obvious bungie is trying to exploit these players specifically, with what everybody calls FOMO. Hopefully I don’t need to explain why exploiting someone’s addiction for profit isn’t exactly a good thing to do, however bungie seems to take pride in their ability to do it.

      • The whole idea of “fomo” is some new gen nonsense. What you’re talking about is called ADDICTION. lol Y’all talk about Bungie like they’re your drug dealer or something.

      • I finally completed Outbreak Prime at the beginning of this season. That’s, what, two or three seasons after it was released? I still have my Luna’s Howl quest that I’ve been inching towards, season by season. I like to do things when I feel like getting around to knocking them out. If I’m pressured into doing them “NOW RIGHT NOW BEFORE THEY LEA-“, I’m more inclined to just not bother at all, rather than rush to grind it out. Hence why I deleted the game yesterday morning after barely playing the entire season. FOMO brings some players in, sure, but it also drives out others.

        • The game is built for people who like to play the game, and like having reasons to show up to play. So it works for the “Great Middle “ band of players. The ones complaining are hardcores who want the game tuned for people who play 6 hours a day. People who want binge-and-then-leave....like streamers. Or people who want to play this game a few hours a week...but still want everything in the game.

Which, in the end, isn't a bad thing.[/quote] Your statement of “FOMO leaves a desire to log in and play the game” is exactly what is wrong with Bungie’s Seasonal Model they have adopted. Exploiting people’s psyche to get Bungie good Playerbase Numbers is exactly the problem. If a Game Developer had to exploit people’s Fear of Missing Out to get players to play their game, then their Game sucks balls. I come from an Era of Gaming where if a Game is good, that in itself in incentive to log in everyday and play it. I played Shadows of Mordor and Shadows of War and kept playing it for the longest time until I had everything and I have hundreds of hours into those games. Same with Jedi Fallen Order, Halo, Gears of War etc. cause they were naturally addicting to play and had a good replay loop/value. If Destiny was naturally addicting and was actually good, Bungie wouldn’t need to exploit the psyche to keep players coming back. Again, your game is shit if you need to exploit people’s Fear of Missing out. Cause the people you are hurting are Collectors and Completionists. Edit: OH and before I forget, go read Paul Tassi’s article recently. FOMO/Time Gates is actually driving people AWAY from Destiny, not toward it. So it’s not a “smart strategy” as you say, it’s scummy and manipulative.

                • FOMO works for Destiny, because it's content is rigid and stale. It has no replayability factor whatsoever. Bungie actively makes old content worse so you can purchase the latest product. Kind of like what Apple did with old iPhones. Making them run slower so you'd upgrade.

FOMO is awful. You're not getting reasons to play the game at all, actually you're getting reasons to NOT play. With a FOMO based content cycle, you can't make new and interesting content because you'd be putting a lot of time and money into something that will disappear in 3mo, so the solution is to make one gamemode and reuse it each season with a very tiny variation. So now the content you get each season is the same as the last except now it looks different. Season of the Dawn is the most pathetic example of how garbage this system is and exposes the true reason for implementing it in the first place, money. We have nothing interesting this season, in week 2 of SoTD we were out of content. We got the corridors puzzle and that's it, literally nothing else for the rest of the season. If they actually gave us something new each season I'd say sure I despise bungie for blatantly spitting in players faces with FOMO but at least the system works but it doesn't. FOMO is going to kill this game by encouraging even further creation of lazy, shallow, boring, and overall low quality content that isn't sustainable for more than a week. Then there's "well there's a reason to play!" If you have to get players to play by putting a time limit on content, you're admitting that the content you're creating isn't good enough to interest your players and you're using said time limit as a cop out basically saying "our content is shitty but if you want to make sure it's shitty you have to play within this completely unnecessary time span" It makes me not want to play actually because why bother when everything will disappear anyway?
