The crucible doesn't have any merit to the overall story, just gameplay
That whole Drifter side quest was a little weird. I think it makes more sense imo when you side with the vanguard, as you can interpret the voice recordings he leaves behind as originally dedicated to your Character since he was so sure we'd side with him. But then again this also isn't a flawless argument and it was clearly Bungie's way of making both results canon

The crucible itself, while with not having any story relevance, does have a good amount of lore reference. And the little tid bit about shaxx saying that the crucible was still open despite only one guardian having the light is odd

Yeah true, but then again he also had razelighter in the first mission and never brought it up again so clearly time and space mean very little to Shaxx
