I know everyone has probably seen the stories circulating today about how Destiny 2’s sales are not meeting Activision’s expectations in spite of the up tick created by Forsaken. So I’d like to take this opportunity to point out why I think that is, so here goes:
1) Destiny 2 is still not as good as Destiny 1.
Destiny 2, like any good sequel, should’ve taken the solid foundation of Destiny 1, and built upon it to make a game that was bigger and better than its predecessor in every way. Instead Bungie opted to do a soft reboot and destroy everything fans loved about the first game, only to spend the next year slowly trying to fix the game.
Forsaken is a major improvement over Destiny 2 year 1 in a lot of ways (but not all), but it’s still a shadow of Destiny 1. A lot of the things that were brought back don’t completely fit. Snipers still feel underused in spite of their return to the special slot (and addition to the primary slot). Bounties feel mostly pointless with the exception of the dreaming city bounties. The mods are still meh. Masterwork cores are far too rare and so having a fully masterworked piece of gear is rare and honestly doesn’t feel worth the amount of materials it takes to do so.
2) First impressions are everything.
Anyone who paid attention to the lead up to the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One back in 2013 knows how bad word of mouth can completely destroy a product. Microsoft was set to release an Xbox One that featured an always online requirement, the inability to trade or loan games to friends or family and no used games. As we all know Microsoft eventually pulled a 180 on these things and shipped the Xbox One with none of those features in the final version of the console, but the damage was already done.
I remember watching a video online of someone from IGN (I believe) going around campuses and on the street asking regular people if they knew anything about video games and if they’d heard of the Xbox One and the most common response was, “that’s the one that doesn’t play used games, right?”. This was AFTER Microsoft had reversed all of those decisions, but it didn’t matter, word of mouth had already spread and there was no going back.
The same thing happened with Destiny 2. Once fans realized what Bungie had done to their beloved series and the backlash began, so did the word of mouth. I still come across people that say things that, “Destiny 2? Didn’t they screw the game up?”. Honestly there’s no going back at this point, they just need to make sure that Destiny 3 is a grand slam.
3) The raids just aren’t as good as Destiny 1
All of Destiny 1’s raids are better than Destiny 2’s. You can say that this is opinion, and technically it is, but it’s an opinion shared by the numbers. Last Wish has the lowest completion rate of any Destiny raid and I believe it’s because people are intimidated by it (it took Redeem 24 hours to complete it).
The raids in Destiny 2 are way too mechanics heavy. Too much time is spent trying to remember odd symbols or trying to make sure everyone is in a specific place. King’s Fall was a master stroke of raid design. The perfect balance of bosses, jumping, shooting things and puzzles. Same goes for VoG. Crota’s End and WotM were less puzzles and mechanics and more bosses and shooting guys in the face, but if you have to lean more one way than the other, leaning more into the action is always the better bet. At the end of the day the Destiny 2 raids just aren’t as inviting or fun as Destiny 1’s.
4) The gear isn’t as good
I had high hopes for the exotics in Forsaken and while some are really great, many leave us reminiscing on the amazing exotics of Destiny 1. First off, rocket launchers are trash in Destiny 2. There’s no other way to say it. Even the Two Tailed Fox was a major letdown. Tracking sucks. They all hold 1 rocket before needing to reload. They just aren’t fun.
And why is it that to this day, the majority of the best exotics to ever appear in Destiny were in the base game? The Taken King has a few good ones, but if you ask someone to make a list of their top ten favorite weapons or armor from Destiny 1 or 2, chances are good that most will be Destiny 1 launch items. And I think this is because before the game came out Bungie wasn’t afraid to make gear that was amazing and super fun to use and worth grinding for. It was when they decided to start nerfing everything that things started going down hill. It really says something when all of the best exotics in Destiny 2 are returning Destiny 1 exotics.
5) Destiny 2 should never have been made.
Destiny should’ve been like WoW. No new numbered games, just expansions that build upon the foundation of the original game. Bungie’s reluctance to simply go back to the systems that everyone loved in Destiny 1 is a problem. I can understand not wanting to revisit what’s already been done from a design standpoint, but it’s also important to be able to realize when you made a mistake by changing something, and recognizing that maybe you need to to reset back to that original system
In order to properly improve upon it.
The weapon slot system is a good example of this. In Destiny 1 it was a perfect system that made sense. But while Forsaken’s system is a major improvement over Destiny 2’s horrible system, Bungie’s unwillingness to fully revert to Destiny 1 leaves this weird system that that tries to be everything to everyone but ultimately feels out of place. In Destiny 1 having the one off exotic that was a special but sat in the primary slot or elemental primaries felt really special and fun.
I know I went long on this but Destiny is my favorite game series and Bungie my favorite game developer and so I really want to see Destiny succeed. But there have been a lot of disappointing mistakes made in recent years to Destiny that I really hope Bungie is able to learn from.
I quit playing Destiny 2 a few weeks ago once I hit 600 because the only thing I had left to pursue were the Forsaken exotics and considering that since Forsaken’s launch I’ve had maybe 10 exotics drop and not a single one was a Forsaken exotic, I didn’t see any point in wasting time grinding for them any longer. And that really sucks to say.
At this point Bungie is going to have to learn how to fix Destiny themselves.

And people thought I was an asshole for pointing out that psn had the game for free and now PC does too. Coupled with being able to now buy forsaken as a stand alone, the writing was on the wall and plain to see to anyone with an unbiased eye.

1 AntwortenI stopped playing D1 around the early days of Rise of Iron for no particular reason; I just stopped playing. I only started playing D2 five days ago because it was free on B.net and so far it's ok. The story is is meh but I got some of the same feelings when I first played Destiny on my PS4, which is a good thing. I should mention that I never planned to play D1 either. I got a white PS4 because it looked cool and it came with Destiny. I'll keep playing D2 but I don't plan on getting any expansions or dedicating as much time as I did with the first one.
-
I second number 5 wish D2 was just a big expansion to D1. Poor bungie got forced into it by Activision and now some of the magic of Destiny is gone. Also bummer because made a giant leap with forsaken but not many people returned because as you stated gear just doesn’t feel worth the investment.

2 AntwortenBearbeitet von Perfectionado: 11/10/2018 1:52:35 AMI agree with all except the last one. The engine needed an upgrade and if theres one thing that D2 does its look amazing. That wouldnt have been possibly with just upgrading D1. Gear, raids ect 100% agree. Can I just say... we are a DARN sight better than what we were at launch. I feel we are 70% of the way towards a great Destiny experience. Raid lairs are a horrible idea. I feel like all the creativity the raid team presented in the psat has just been resticted. Like heres one boss and one mini encounter. Go nuts. As opposed to a full 4-5 boss raid with puzzles and hidden stuff. I am very passionate about that sort of thing and honestly wish they would give us back a full raid per expansion.

1 AntwortenYou know what this means? It means D3 will be incredibly microtransaction heavy. Eververse will be turned up to 11. Eververse will not just be for ghost shells or cosmetics in D3, its gunna be pay to win just like for honor was and still is, just like battle front 2 was. I guarantee you this 100%. They will probably even add in a level up system that you can bypass by paying real money and add bundle packages for real money that give massive exp boosts or damage boosts or reload boots etc. etc.

7 AntwortenDisagree, Forsaken is the best version of Destiny.
-
Let’s not talk about the fact that Destiny 2 made more money than any game IN THE WORLD in September.
-
4 AntwortenD2 is way better than D1.
-
Disagree. I’ve never enjoyed destiny more. This raid is tied for me with kings fall as far as entertainment (and I don’t cheese riven so I actually enjoy the fight as they designed it). I’ve done last wish 42 times and I only did King’s fall less than 20. Oryx is still my favorite boss, only reason riven is behind is because I liked him having four mandatory phases that changed halfway through. I can usually one phase riven doing it the legit way with all eye call outs and mechanics. She needs more health, and a second phase of mechanics and it would’ve been better for me at least. Pvp feels pretty solid for me, D1 felt like absolute trash at the end with fusion nade and ability spam.

3 AntwortenBearbeitet von Tydrimar: 11/9/2018 11:14:04 PMI have to disagree. I see d2 is much better than d1 but in the end it's just a matter of opinion. D2 overall is a success but apparently Activision wants more $$. I can agree when d2 first launch because it was to simple to obtain everything and hit max power. Coo was not the best dlc but it added some useful content. Warmind made it even better.
-
I disagree with your reasoning for raid completion. Once I realized that I would hit 600 without ever raiding I was severely disappointed. The fact it took almost no real grind time to do so (a month to max is not much in franchise terms) made it even worse. The fact you do not need end game activities to get end game power level is a huge killer. What motivation do I have to get lackluster gear from a raid that you accurately describe as less fun than D1 raids? Though I actually rank kings fall as my least favorite. I preferred VoG. Your whole team can wipe and you can bring them back. That clutch feeling was a hell of a rush! Getting fatebringer was icing on the cake! I don’t like the “stand here for 8.2 seconds and if anyone moves them you wipe” mechanic.

Bearbeitet von Sovereign: 11/9/2018 9:46:57 PMThe actual end result is more microtransactions for us. Which makes me not want to come back. But my feedback thread was literally just laughed off if not deleted by this point. "Not enouch cash", well gee. What' time to kill the chance to come back? Fine. I won't invest MY time into this mess. I'll let it burn as I play other things. Not sorry after how badly mistreated this community has been.

I’m not sure I totally agree, but you’ve made me think about it at least.
-
Yeah Forsaken is pretty disappointing.
-
4 AntwortenYou've accomplished all the triumphs and earned all the badges? Incredible! How'd you do it? Also, Forsaken is better than any D1 dlc.
-
Anything less than infinity is not enough money for these guys and the result is gonna be more microtransactions to squeeze what little money they can out of their player base before the player base has had enough and leaves for good.
-
Because the sales are bad, Activision wants more micro-transactions added.

3 AntwortenI do not not know if this right place to ask but here goes I just bought destiny 2 forsaken standard edition but I´m little bit confused about what does it include. Other hand product site implies that other two dlc are included But I´m not sure because there is also another version called legendary edition and that seems to imply that those two dlc or ¨expansions¨ are only available on that version. So any help would be greatly appreciated. https://eu.shop.battle.net/en-us/family/destiny-2 https://eu.shop.battle.net/en-us/product/destiny2-forsaken-legendary-collection https://eu.shop.battle.net/en-us/product/destiny2-forsaken

Imo last wish is better then every raid in D1 besides WoTM.

Spot on.

Regarding this game being desriny 2. They couldnt expand it from the first game because of d1 being on 360 and ps3. D3 Might be a game sized expansion onto D2 but they werent able to do that because of the old gen consoles.

Couldn't agree more with everything you've written! Well said and I really hope Bungie reads this .
