For those that do not like to watch, here it is in written form as well =)
Destiny 2 Warmind Expansion has not had the best of launches. In fact, it’s been riddled with problems. Matchmaking breaking, Rat King causing serious issues and eventually being forced to be disabled. Heroic Strikes being riddled with problems and not registering, exotic quests not progressing, licenses not registering among other things. It really hasn’t been the smoothest of launches. In fact, i would go as far as saying, that it has been the worst launch for the Destiny franchise ever in terms of problems. The main scenario campaign is extremely short. So short in fact that there is literally only 2 missions in the game, The rest of the campaign plays out in the remaining 2 strikes to conclude the story. Both Nokris a fundamental character and Xol are not only introduced in these 4 missions but also dealt with in their respective strikes. Quite frankly it’s not acceptable by any standard. People on the official forums are defending this but I simply cannot see any way that this act could be defended. Not one. We found out nothing about Ana Bray, we pretty much found out nothing about Rasputin other then Bungie retconning what we knew about Rasputin from Destiny 1 as false and now rewriting the lore. Sounding familiar? It should. This is pretty much the travesty that was Curse of Osiris all over again. Heroic Strikes have now been increased to power level 350 and are now a full-on challenge. The fact that Heroic Strikes are 80 power levels above Normal Nightfall is also a bit absurd. But more importantly Heroic strikes did 2 things, It finally locked out non DLC players from playing Heroic Strikes, and 2, the rewards from Heroic Strikes are by and large, insulting. It seems the soft cap applies to Heroic strikes as well despite being 350 recommended power level. It’s absurd and stupid. At the very least it should have dropped 350 from the end game chest but no. The soft cap is a real nuisance and has in all honesty ruined strikes in Destiny 2 forever, as Bungie will have no intention of changing this system any time soon.
Unlike the verse system which was the only grind or activity in Curse of Osiris, Warmind changes this. This is where Warmind shines, and by the traveler does it shine! Raids and lair raids remain relevant in dropping gear that is higher in power level to you. Zavala now has a progression system for you to grind you earn ornaments, weapons, ghosts and more. It’s pretty awesome. Lord Shaxx is no different, the Crucible Ranking system is well underway. Tes has a new Prismatic Matrix for the player base to enjoy. It’s a slightly fairer system with a knockout rule for 10 items per week with 3 keys given to you on a weekly basis on rank up. In my honest opinion, this is fair as you still continue to get Prototype Engrams, the new Illuminated Engram.
After you finish the main campaign the true grind begins. And this is what Warmind does extremely well. Exotic Catalysts will make your exotic weapons go Masterworks before giving you a second phase quest to unlock its perk. You unlock a quest that helps you decipher the nodes you see everywhere. In order to obtain these you need to farm all content to get fragments, 4 make a cipher. Unlocking 35 of these is required to attain the exotic sword, attaining all 45 gives you the exotic sparrow. You have elemental nodes to destroy as well scattered around mars. These unlock other caches. You have a quest for a hand cannon and the sleeper simulant. All in all the grind is there. There really is a lot here to get through. Powering up has also been handicapped to prolong your experience in Destiny 2. Outside of these grinds, you have the new Lair Raid on Friday, and you also have the Escalation Protocol that already has been beaten. On top of this, you have new and returning exotic weapons. Almost all exotic weapons have been updated and as such are pretty much new in themselves. As well as these you also have a ton lore and scannables all over the place for you to find. One scannable explained the origin of Exos which was very interesting. There really is a lot here for you to do and if you don’t rush it like the many content creators are already doing, there will be plenty here for you to do for quite some time. One streamer already has 370 power level to give you some idea. It’s not even been a week. I have gotten to 351 and I still have the Leviathan raid to do, heroic Strike Milestones, trials of nine clan engrams and more.
See it seems Bungie decided to go down the route of minimal story content but maximum in-game content. And honestly though for me, the story is just as important, just as impactful, just as essential to the Destiny experience as the content to keep coming back. Given the time they had, I think they made the best choice they could. However, Nokris and Xol should have been treated in a more respectful manner. They are not nobodies, they are iconic and integral parts to the destiny lore and to be brushed aside like this, in a demeaning way is very very very bad script writing from Bungie’s part, almost disgraceful. But it seems the actual campaign is the only disappointing part. The rest is a solid foundation of what’s to come in the fall update. It’s no longer a step in the right direction. But Bungie is now taking leaps and taking risks to try and win the player base back. My clan for the first time in ages was online and having tons of fun searching for stuff, questing, striking, nightfalling, raiding the whole schabang. It was nice to see. Bungie now need to build on this foundation cause its a solid foundation, give more care to the story in September, and i mean a lot more care so much care that the community will complain that Bungie showed so much care as well as things to strive for and I think they have a winner on their hands finally.
Question your asking now is the following, Is Warmind worth your purchase? My response despite the main scenario from Warmind being a joke is a resounding Yes. You don’t need Curse of Osiris to experience Warmind, as no events take place on Mercury. However, If you're going to pay £20 or $20 for Warmind, I think despite its flaws and lack of content, Curse of Osiris at £10 or $10 (if buying the season pass) may just be worth a look at. Ultimately the choice is yours but Bungie tried their best to deliver an expansion that delivered content-wise to keep the player base engaged long after they finished the main campaign which by and large took about 2-hours. And they have achieved just that. If you're on the fence, in my opinion, you should give this another look. It’s worth your time. The loot looks good and promising and the content is flourishing.
So taking into account, the lack of a meaningful campaign, no voice for your guardian, lack of any meaningful information for Xol, Nokris, Ana Bray, or Rasputin. On top of this, the horrendous loot drops for the heroic strikes which need to be changed ASAP and the continued launch problems that are impacting the game right now, as the negatives of this expansion, I would give Warmind a 7/10. Yes I haven’t played the Lair raid yet but it’s cabal based again and it seems it’s going to end here as well.
