barring infusing an exotic, if the light level is more than 20 different you get diminishing returns on the infusion (it doesn't go straight to the base power level of the piece of gear you infuse into it).
So if I'm understanding you correctly, you infused a 265 Uriel's Gift with a 296 Coldheart. Since Uriel's Gift is not an exotic, you experienced diminishing returns.
if the light level is more than 20 different you get diminishing returns on the infusion (it doesn't go straight to the base power level of the piece of gear you infuse into it).
Since when? That hasn't been the case since year 2 of Destiny 1. Since at least Rise of Iron, infusion of a weapon or armor takes all the power (formerly Light level), except that extra from a legendary mod if one is equipped on the weapon.

we're not playing D1. Any time I've infused something more than 20 base light level apart (not including legendaries), I get diminishing returns.
we're not playing D1
Duh...it works the same way as it did in D1 Y3. All power gets infused, not just part of it.
Any time I've infused something more than 20 base light level apart (not including legendaries), I get diminishing returns.
Never happened to me or any other friends or clan members. Whenever 1 item is infused into another, the second item should become the same power as the item infused into it, minus any legendary mod that might be on the first item that may not be on the second item.
if the light level is more than 20 different you get diminishing returns on the infusion (it doesn't go straight to the base power level of the piece of gear you infuse into it)
Source for this claim? I've never heard of this and have never had any issues infusing with 1:1 return (unless one has a mod and the other doesn't).

it's happened to me and other people I've played with when infusing things that are more than 20 apart in their base power level (so not including legendary mods).

I'd like to see a video of this.
