2 AntwortenDestiny 1 already explained why our Guardians don't speak. Does ANYONE remember the Cayde's Stash mission?

1 AntwortenI disagree, to quote my guardian when he was given Young Wolfs Howl and ascended to be an iron lord

That line alone alone proves how cool and rich the story is

7 AntwortenBearbeitet von GX: 7/31/2017 11:56:49 AMGive me Joseph Staten's original vision for Destiny instead of this dull pathetic mess of a story that has been going nowhere for 3 years. I don't care about Cayde-6 doing his little Deadpool cringe act and I don't care about some artificial cabal threat just so Destiny 2's set up can exist. I want to know what the Traveller is and where it came from, what the Darkness is, who the Exo Stranger is, what Eris Mourn is up to, I want to see the Worm Gods, Ahamkara, Queen Mara Sov and her insane power. Destiny's story just doesn't feel very grand and nothing ever really seems to be happening or be at stake. In Halo, the entire galaxy and all life was in danger of being destroyed from the Halos and the Flood infestation. We had a clear motive that was driving our journey from the get go, defeat the covenant, stop the flood, save the galaxy. WTF am I even doing in Destiny? Destiny's current story has become like the TV show Lost, the writers have absolutely no idea where it's going and what it's all building up to. The sad truth is that Destiny's true story was lost with Staten.

You would be in for a world of shock if you weren't illiterate and were introduced to any critical narrative theory.

1 AntwortenBearbeitet von kindkitten90593: 7/31/2017 4:19:38 PMI played through vanilla campaign recently, and when I got to the ship in the beginning guardian says "will it fly" (I know vanilla doesn't have much player character dialogue) but, It made me realize how weird the game looked with a silent character. I don't need massive amounts of dialogue just a reply, a remark, a quip, a thought....

Bearbeitet von AngelusDomini: 8/1/2017 5:27:00 AMYou guys are crazy. The main character talking doesn't enhance the story at all. It's far better to be able to project your own identity onto the character, than have your character's identity projected onto you. I mean, there's so many examples of how talking characters make for horrible games. Like, the Uncharted series or Mass Effect trilogy, for example. Oh wait... those were phenomenal games. I have to admit, it's not a deal breaker for me, but that intro in the beta where your ghost is just talking to you and your character just sits there silent as a corpse was pretty awkward, if not offputting. The silent reaching out for your ghost after it's knocked off the ship. It gives you this feeling of a giant void in cinema scenes involving your character, and kinda creepy.

Bearbeitet von Penhalion Wolfe: 8/1/2017 4:15:42 PMEven the faceless master chief spoke! And he is the poster child for the silent player protagonist! The consequence of this choice is going to be to make the story very wooden. It was evident from just the homecoming mission that your guardian should have spoken. It's not even rocket science to have a male and female voice actor just say a small set of responses and questions that are then used during cut scenes. I fully expected (As on destiny 1) for my guardian to say stuff like:- Ghost what is it? Snap out of it whoever! I cant do this alone! Etc. Etc. Otherwise how does this cinematic story telling work? I will literally have no investment in it as a player!

I know that there are alot of silent protagonist. However there is no reason to make them silent in this type of game. It just makes more sense for your character to respond to things around him and the people he/she is in contact with. Its also a good way to deliver story when you are not in a cutscene. For instance, when your character is in the field and talking to ghost, they could deliver some story with that banter. I dont think it will ruin the game but I think they missed out on enhancing the immersion.

While I made this post as a humorous, hopefully entertaining way to vent my frustration over the lack of voiced Guardians, it also occurred to me Luke could be totally trolling us. While that's most likely not the case, his one word answer is suspect. Either way, I don't think the decision was made to cut costs nor do I think it was made lightly. As someone who worked in the industry for a decade, I can say that no developer wants to ship a bad game and that they work their asses off in hope that the final product leaves the majority of their customers satisfied. Back on topic, it's obvious there are those who could care less about the lack of voice and those who actually prefer it that way. For the former, they wouldn't care if voice was added back in and well, the latter, would probably feel as we do now, just in reverse. We may differ in this opinion, but we can assume the vast majority of us are here because we're attached to this game series. We're all Guardians, and outside of the Crucible we're cool with each other. 😉 With that said, forums and other social media are our way to communicate that we disapprove of this choice, but always be respectful. See you all starside!

Bearbeitet von Rossap: 8/1/2017 1:18:17 PMSo, here's the thing, its this dialogue that made me care about -and relate to- my character and story in vanilla more than anything since. Sure, TTK and rise of iron (and the homecoming mission in the Beta) have better storytelling and story, but I don't care what 'the guardian' (our guardian) does, it's the other characters (that speak) that I identify with and see myself in. In short, I saw myself (as Luke smith wants us to) in my guardian when they spoke, and now they don't, I see myself in the other characters whose voices -and personalities- I can hear. Not very cinematic I must say. Edit: corrected spelling:)

2 AntwortenWas anything really added by the Guardian's dialogue in D1? Your character didn't know anything about anything, and was only voiced to prompt exposition from other characters. I would guess the design direction at this point is to give that role to Ghost, so that your voice is actually your voice, and used for coordinating with fireteams. Silent protagonists aren't exactly new, and I certainly don't have a problem with them.

4 AntwortenBungie hasn't released a game with a worthwhile central character since 2007. Half their releases in that timeframe have completely mute main characters. I'm starting to think Bungie 2001-2007 storytelling is the fluke, and Bungie 2010-2017 storytelling is what we should expect.

2 AntwortenBearbeitet von GRAVEL: 7/31/2017 10:13:15 PMWell, with a silent hero there's more reason to re-buy all those emotes you'll be needing to properly communicate.
-
1 AntwortenMight have been alright if they had done this from the start just seems weird that all of a sudden our voice has gone.
-
4 Antworten"What's it to you? You who has slain gods in the Black Garden?" That one is kinda weird. The Ghost is frightened and Zavala acts like it's speaking for you. It's one point in the games that lends credence to having a dialogue for your own character.

9 AntwortenGordon Freeman. Link, aka The Hero of Time. The Chosen Undead, aka Seeker of Ash. Our Guardian. I'm fine with our Guardian being mute. Perhaps our first respawn in the Prison of Elders scrambled our vocal chords, or fried the speech center of our brains (or the Exo equivalent). I only wish we had different Ghosts, or different voice settings on Ghosts. Nolan North is great, but I'd kill for a cold, analytical, female Ghost.
