So an interesting thought to open up discussion.
Ok, so we have Native American Tribesman. The varying and vast cultures that each tribe represents. The majority of which that have been assimilated or lost to time over the past 400 years.
At which point did we as Europeans become, Native Americans? Liberals like to attack whites lately for genocide, land stealing, ect ect... Yet we have been a nation for over 200 years. Are we not all now, Native Americans.

Are we not ourselves after a few generations native Americans ourselves?
If we use logic, reason, and facts. Yes we are all native Americans.
I am personally of actual native heritage, Black foot, and chippewa to be clear.
However my family stopped taking part in tribal affairs a century ago.
I by no means condone the genocide that took place.
I simply am tired of people holding the current generation hostage for things that occurred 250 years ago.

Well, even the native Americans weren't native at one point. They probably came over a land bridge in Alaska from Asia.

We are, by that definition you gave, a native of the United States. However, those born in America with no ancestry in a Native American bloodline (Apache, Iroquois, Seminole, etc) are of a different definition (this may be a bad explanation. We'll just say little "n" and big "N". Honestly, we should just stop using the term "Native American" and begin to use the correct tribal names for the peoples being described. But, I do see the point of using "Native American" when talking about the groups of people who migrated to America as a whole.

Today we suffer from the genocide of thought: the genocide that kills genders and identities, relegating the infinite variety of the human soul down to two, infinitely oppressive pronouns. Ask yourself that when gays and other gender identities find themselves cordoned off from the rest of society. Ask yourself if it matters when the wage gap widens again to epic proportions. This last election represented nothing less than a cosmic struggle for human justice and equality, a battle that reason and decency lost. For those of us with a different skin, identity, or political voice: we are all the natives now. And the pure drum beat of our heritage is is becoming distant, overwhelmed by the strident march of the pateiarchy's calvary...

I do agree that people need to get over the past and people (native American, African American, Australian aboriginal for example but obviously not limited too) need to stop using historical injustices as an excuse.

2 AntwortenIt isn't fair that we are held accountable but think we aren't helping them much. In Canada here they are basically second class citizens. This is left over from things we've done to them in the past. That includes the residential schools that caused many to die and have major problems like alcoholism and drug abuse. That has no good effects in any community. We give them land they want. But we don't care enough to give them adequate support. Take Attawapiskat for an example. It is in the far north of Ontario, pretty remote. People there are living in third world conditions, in a first world country! How messes up is that? It's not enough to apologize for the wrong doings of the past, we have to help them thrive, give them the opportunity to not be living in poverty. Anyways that's my take from a Canadian perspective. 5 AntwortenUnfortunately native american is also a race. So you are asking something similar to "at what point are we all black?" True, generational grudges are annoying but if you do nothing to ensure there are no laws that allow things like -blam!- to be perfectly legal on reservations (there is a loophole like that in the states) or are other wise racist/oppressive, then you are still to blame.

Technically yes you could say that. However you could also argue that "Native American" refers to the race whose heritage is native to America. If that's the case, then technically there is no such thing as a Native American, as Caucasians migrated from Europe, and the "Native Americans" migrated from Russia via the ice bridge between Alaska and Siberia. All that said, colloquially, it makes more sense to just keep the labeling the way it is. There's no need to nitpick the language as long as everyone can understand what you're talking about.
