You understand quantum mechanics? Because i do. It's a hobby of mine. How about heuristics? Hierology? I could go on, but I'm not really looking to start listing all the skills on my resume for some random nobodies online. Suffice to say, i understand and comprehend a lot more than you. *shrug* but I'm sure you've got something slick and snappy to say in response. Or maybe you'll surprise me and not respond at all. That would be a change of pace.

You may not be doing it intentionally, but some of your posts are very strong in that direction. :) It's always good to stir up crap in the forums though. As far as the "i understand and comprehend a lot more than you" part is concerned, you never know what type of person you are going to run into around here. ;) Btw, understanding something and having a comprehension of something? Same thing friend, same thing.

Generally i make some arrogant assumptions, and that's probably a character flaw of mine. Recognizing the problem is always the first step though, i suppose. There are plenty of folks who can understand an equation to solve for x, but they don't comprehend why x matters. They're similar phrases, and it can look like semantics, but it's a definite distinction.

But to actually understand the equation, would that not also imply that you have an understanding of why x matters? By definition, Comprehension IS the same as understanding. To be honest, I just googled it (just to make sure) and the first synonym for comprehension just happens to be understanding. We can call it semantics, if you would like, but, by definition... Same thing.

That's the funny thing with definitions though, they don't account for context, because even a language that's fairly simple, like English, is constantly evolving. Understanding is in HOW things work. Comprehension is in WHY things work. You can have understanding without comprehension, but you can't often have comprehension without understanding.

Yes... evolution of words. That MUST be taken into account. Sometimes I forget that. :) Context is something that gets skipped over (more likely, misunderstood) often in the written word. It can be difficult to relay the context through a keyboard.

Totally true. Misunderstanding is the biggest downside to internet communication. Hence all the "we gotsta ban fake news!!!" stuff that's been proposed here lately. Sarcasm is the most commonly found emotional response online and also now the least noticed for what it is. Crazy, heh.

Ineffective, all i see are squares and x's. An insult only works if the person on the receiving and can see the insult and thus BE insulted by it. So, yeah. I'm doing just fine. Thinking about making another pot of coffee, honestly.
