I am doing an argumentative essay for my English class that is due in like a month. While I was doing research, I was curious to hear what Offtopic had to say. While, Offtopic isn't the greatest place to find information, I was just curious and I'm sure there are a few educated individuals on this site that can provide me with resources and evidence to prove their decision. So the question is, "Is capital punishment an effective way to reduce crime, or is rehabilitation more effective because it is humane and it rejects the idea of a country committing the crimes it forbids?"

2 AntwortenNo. Killing someone costs more than leaving them in prison anyways, unless they somehow survive for 40 years.

1 AntwortenIt would be if it didn't take 30 years to carry out a death sentence.

10 AntwortenBearbeitet von KrayZSamurai: 12/15/2016 7:15:23 PMNo it's not. "To murder a murderer is ironic in itself." It's the "eye for an eye" thing; a form of revenge and not justice. Killing for killing is counterproductive and it's not right just because someone did something so incredibly wrong. And before people go saying things like "capital punishment is not murder" - yes it is! Murder (by definition) is the premeditated plan of killing a specific person. In this case, it's the premeditated plan of killing a murderer. Only the government is doing it and not a civilian. Rehabilitation is much better. I know space in prison is limited and prisons are expensive, but rehabilitation is truly the way to go if you want to make a dent or difference in crime rates.

IN MY OPINION It would be if it were more cost effective, but only with definitive proof.
-
In the end, the death penalty is just another form of revenge.

1 AntwortenTo a degree... consequences, especially grave ones, will always be a deterrent to sane minds. However, it will never stop the neglectful, insane or the most depraved. The good news is, that if you have capital punishment and utilize it, at minimum for the most inhuman killers, you rid society of not just a threat down the road, but someone that is hopeless unredeemable. My stance on this subject has softened in my later year, but it has never crossed my mind to get rid of capital punishment as a whole. It's best to put the blood thirsty down, they will never reform.

2 AntwortenIs it more effective? Yes. Is it right? Not really. If you're caught driving under the influence and they chop your foot off, obviously people will not want to drive drunk. Doesn't make it right to chop people's feet off though ya know?

1 AntwortenWell, if you commit a murder and know you'll get the death penalty for it, why wouldn't you try to kill the police when they come for you? You might as well go down fighting if they're going to kill you anyway.

3 Antworten>26 yes >21 no A pretty good method of assessing the reliability or accuracy of something is asking OffTopic and then going with the exact opposite of what this forum decides.

1 AntwortenI'd love to see some statistics to support all those "yes"s.

Treason is punishable by death.
-
There may or may not be a correlation between crime rates and the existence of capital punishment. Honestly, there are more effective ways to reduce crime. Reduce single-motherhood and decrease state-dependence. You'll see a decline in crime after that.

Not in america
-
There wasn't less crime 300 years ago when people were being routinely killed, so clearly it isn't actually that effective. I mean it stops people reoffending but that's about all it does.
-
Effective yes More effective than life in prison no
-
Capital punishment is not a deterrent.
-
It depends. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. But if it's an absolutely sick monster of a human who can't be reintegrated back into society, they should be (I don't really know how to say it) put down.
-
No but it's fun
-
Is it effective? Yes. They can't repeat, and it deters, but you can't fix your mistakes. If you sentence someone to death, and it is later proved that they were innocent.... nothing you can do. I personally feel kinda neutral about it...
-
Depends on the punishment. Injection? Probably not. Public hanging? Yep
-
1 AntwortenYes, capital punishment used to be much more common and well, crime was lower when it was
-
Depends on the person. I forget the exact terminology but there is a small percentage of people who won't stop committing crimes. They go to jail, get released, and get in trouble again. Rehabilitation doesn't work for them. However, only very sinister crimes should be considered when giving out the death penalty. It all comes down to the severity of the crime committed and the type of person who committed it.
