Hardlined, High DL really low UL.

I have been playing Destiny consistently for months now, (07/16) and within the last week I've started having a red bar connection randomly. I reset my ps4 (sometimes my router/modem too) and it usually goes back to full green for a few hours and then back to red.(Occasionally stays red too) I have my ps4 plugged directly in to my Router, have a static IP set up, gave it top QoS priority, and have run several connection tests. My results are usually 41-50 DL but only 200-440kb upload? Before it was a 48mb DL - 3.2mb UL consistantly.(Highest 49.2/3.7)(Lowest 27/200kb) No one streams netflix/Hulu, the most activity besides the ps4 on the network would be Facebook, or regular browser sites. And like I said I'm hardlined with Top Priority on the router. I tried porting but it actually decreased my DL speed by roughly 10mb although it did increase my upload to roughly 850kb. Any ideas? I've called the ISP and my modem is "Showing perfect connection rates" and they can send out a tech for 50$ to tell me the exact same thing. -- Occasionally at its peak it will be at 48.1 / 3.7 but it fluctuates alot, down to a minimum of 17.3 / 220kb. That I've seen/tested through the ps4.

  • Hello Bane. Okay, so from reading it looks like your upload is the cause of your issues, as you are likely aware. Having it fluctuate or remain sub 500kB/s can potentially cause issues, as Destiny can use up to 1MB/s Up and down at peak. So a few things, are you using a router+modem combo or a separate router and modem? Are you making sure that the modem is correctly bridging into the router? Does your ISP use adaptive rate technologies or Digital Line Management? Repeated disconnections or power-cycles of your router is interpreted by these systems as a fault and not a user interaction. If it sees this enough times to promote stability it will reduce line speeds, usually hitting the upload speed first. Note: This is a thing in the UK if you live outside of the UK your ISP may not use this (I can only really speak for the UK), but it's always worth checking. If the only thing others are doing on your home network is general browsing, you probably don't need to be using QoS, whilst it is handy to prioritise bandwidth to your device, it can cause added load on your router CPU. This in turn can drop your upload and download speeds depending on how powerful your routers CPU is. If you are looking to free up more on your router, disabling wireless or at least the 5GHz channel (if it supports dual band) could help. Eliminate all other devices from your network when testing, your network should look like this [Internet/Line in > Modem/Router > PS4] Disable wireless and make sure the only thing connected is your console, and test to see if you are hitting expected speeds. PC's/ laptops on your home network, (even if you think they are using no bandwidth) can be updating or using idle bandwidth, you can look up processes such as 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service.' Have you updated your hardware firmware recently? Have you attempted using another router to check if it is hardware failure?

Hello. Are you ensuring that all other applications have been completely closed out when playing Destiny? Switching between games/apps without closing them out causes the prior game/app to continue to run "in the background". I don't have a PS4 to verify this since I'm on Xbox, but I'm sure the same thing applies. The only other thing I can advise is to have your ISP run a check on your network while you're attempting to play Destiny to see if they notice any changes with your up/down speeds, ping, packet loss, etc.

      • Have you talked to your isp and had them test your connection while on destiny? Sometimes it's just an isp issue, but your upload and fluctuating bandwidth in general is going to cause you issues. Power cycle everything and see if that helps.
