At some point during a mission, you hear about someone from the city being caught by security in the Tower and escorted off of the premesis. Next mission you hear that his family have reported him missing, so the Vanguard think he's snuck into the Tower again. In the mission after that, you hear about the Tower's armory being broken into. Finally, on the way to the fourth mission (an asset retrieval mission), you hear from your ghost that the ship has some unregistered cargo. Halfway through the mission, the vigilante reveals himself to you, having stowed away on your ship. Your objective for the rest of the mission is to protect him from enemies and make sure he doesn't die (he has no shields due to not being a guardian, and if he dies it's an instant Consumed by Darkness). When you get to the assets you're supposed to retrieve (weapons cache, or possibly some mats), a boss appears. You have to defeat the boss, whilst at the same time using your ghost to order the vigilante to move around (so as to stop him getting killed by the boss' attacks). When the boss' health is nearly gone, he charges up a powerful blast of energy (you must order the vigilante into cover) which is guaranteed to OHKO all guardians present. This triggers a cutscene in which the vigilante waits for the shockwave to pass, and then lunges at the boss with his stolen shotgun. He jumps at the boss, shoves the barrel right into its neck, and pulls the trigger, causing its head to come off. Due to the Darkness Zone being dispersed, the guardians can now revive themselves and transmat the assets. In a post mission cutscene, Zavala and Ikora chastise the vigilante for putting himself at risk, whereas Cayde commends his bravery and persuades them to ease off on him. Also, Cayde tells him he can keep the shotgun.
