So, let's begin. Here's what you do. Start a new character and get your ship. (A.K.A. Do the first mission) Now stop. Don't go to Amanda Holliday, because you will then lose your ship. You are going to want to put the first ship into the vault. You can do this with your other character. Take one ship and put it in the vault.
An alternate method would be to use the companion app. So now equip the ship on your new character and put the first ship in the vault. Now you have the very first ship. You're welcome.

I used to have one way back, one of the Bungie updates upgraded it to the repaired version...much to my displeasure. Not going to delete a character just to have it back, too much progress on all of them.
