They probably added them to make the number of light variables an even 10. So the algorithm that calculates your light has an easier and more accurate time.

  • Actually it does make sense because it would eliminate a great deal of approximations since bungie would likely prefer to represent your light level as a whole number rather than decimals.

  • But they do that anyway. There's a progress bar that shows the decimal as a visual representation of your light level. Whether it's 9 or 10 variables doesn't actually matter to the calculation. Although 9 would probably be faster due to fewer inputs. But that difference in computation is very minor. The point is, quit looking at the problem like a human would. Think like a computer. Once you understand that thought process you will see why I think that the more logical explanation is that bungie just wanted to add another item to the grind to get you to play their game more.

  • Let me give you an example; let's say that you have eight pieces of armor that are 333 light and one that is 328, your total sum is 2992. Now let's divide that by 9 which equals 332.444 continuously, now you have to extend the algorithm to now round up or down respective to this continuous decimal which is complicated. Whereas let's say that we have ten slots, so we have nine pieces that are 333 and one that is 328, your total sum is now 3325. Now divide that by 10 and you get 332.5 which is much easier to round up and down from. It's much simpler to have a command to round up from one decimal place than an infinite amount of decimal places. Now because a computer is running this calculation you would never notice a difference in time. But the time it would take to write this algorithm into the code would take longer and that takes time away from other things that bungie could be doing such as creating new maps and rewards. So you should actually be thinking like a developer and not like a computer.

  • Except: light level is never represented by a rounding function. It's always been a decimal. Let's go back to year one. Back then you needed about 12 light to gain one level once you passed the first few levels. There was also a visual representation of the remainder of your light that wasn't enough to bring you up a level that was displayed on your character emblem. The fact that this was displayed in terms of twelfths (and other fractions at lower levels) proves that the code already existed to deal with odd decimal numbers. Again, I don't think they added artifacts to make nice round numbers for the system.

  • There's a difference between an odd decimal number and a continuous decimal. Both require different instructions to tackle and so having everything be divided by ten and then rounded up from one decimal place rather than an infinite number of decimal places is much more efficient and less time consuming to impliment.

    The thing is that your light level is the sum of light on each piece of gear divided by the number of relevant pieces of gear so the amount of variables doesn't make the calculation go faster or slower at all because there is only ever two. What having ten gear slots does do is have your light level be representative in values of ten rather than values of nine which makes the display of light level more consistent and predictable to the humans who are playing the game.
