A Wild Gringo has appeared
For those of you who have chosen the lifestyle of "Living Under a Rock", 3 of Coins (or simply 3oC) is a purchasable good that good ole' wispy face sells. It is a consumable that you use before you kill an ultra or finish a crucible match in the chance that it may drop an exotic engram. You then hand this engram to Master Rahool who decrypts it into an exotic.
It is in my humble opinion that 3oC ruins one of the best mechanics in the game and should be taken out (and could be without hurting the game).
Why?
Ask any year 1 player their favorite memory of getting an exotic. It may be a quest exotic like Thorn or an RNG one like Gjallihorn. I personally have 2 ones that stand out to me. My first completion of VoG, I got Plan C. It was my third exotic (Red Death from Xur and Invective from quest were 1 and 2) and I flipped out. My second was Gjallihorn. I was carrying a low level friend through a Solar Rockets McDickface in HoW. After hours of wiping and reloading in, we finally killed him. I got Gjallihorn (and promptly lost my shit) and my friend got Don't Touch Me (with that he hit level 34 and said "I won Destiny" and left and never got back on).
Now ask a Y2 player a memory of getting an exotic. The chances of them saying an RNG exotic (as opposed to a quest one like the Swords) are pretty low. There is just something about handing your engram to Rahool that just wipes anything memorable from the experience. You may have killed Taniks using only a sidearm but you would never remember that because when he dropped an exotic secondary engram, you probably thought "oh I bet its another Hereafter". So when you got a Telestlo finally, you forgot about Taniks and all you remember is Rahool, like every other exotic you own.
On top of this, 3oC is quite annoying. After every Crucible game, or every strike, you have to pop another 3oC. It gets quite goddamn repeatable and worthless and the worst is when you forget to use it and feel like you wasted your time playing that last game.
Tl;dr 3oC destroys any memorable experience of receiving an exotic and constantly using them is annoying and it is very punishing if you forget to use them.
How
As I previously said, I feel 3oC is toxic to the game and annoying to players, but it is still one of the best ways to get exotics. The game has relied heavily on them for getting players loot. How could Bungie remove them while still keeping the game intact (Well obviously I am about to tell you)?
I think the solution is quite simple: Make all Raid bosses, Strike bosses, and crucible matches drop exotics at a rate the same as 3oC engram drop rates. This would keep the amount of loot flowing more or less the same, but not rely on the 3oC and no farming (Drakis and the Gatekeeper know what I mean). Just playing heroic strikes with no annoying "pop a 3oC" and memorable loot would be great. That feeling of getting a Ghorn in Y1 would return. Imagine that Rumble game where you totally destroyed and got MIDA finally or you killed the Psion Flayers and that last one dropped both the cloak and the ATS Arachnid. This would allow exotic armor drops to be looked forward to and come reliably. Adding armor to the drops would make everything more rare since there will be more possible drops if it even does drop an exotic.
Tl;dr Adding exotic Weapons and Armors to Strike, Raid, and crucible drops at the same rate as 3oC exotic engram drops would essentially do the same thing as 3oC without the above mentioned negatives. (Oh it would also be cool if every exotic had a quest, but that is impossible for Destiny currently.)
Now this change is certainly not necessary. I just think it would be a nice quality of life change that would add another layer of personality to the game that has slowly been forgotten (but with less disparity over low drop rates)
What do you think? Do you like 3oC or do you prefer when exotics dropped without the consumable?
