As Alexander Payne once said, "You just never know when you're living in a golden age."
I know now that if Destiny ever had a golden age, it is long gone, but can it ever come back? It depends on if we speak up.
The implementation of Skill-Based Matchmaking has destroyed this game. Match times take twice as long as before, and the matches that we do get thrown into are either in progress or are complete sweat fests. It doesn't help that our once-favorite Exotic guns now feel like severely mediocre pea shooters that are mere shells of their former selves. Still, for the purposes of this post, I would like to focus on SBMM.
A little about myself. Last summer, I pulled consistent 2.5 to 3 k/ds and found that I was at the top of the scoreboard almost every match. On an average game, I would pull about a 2 to a 2.3 k/d. On an above-average game, I would pull as high as a 5 k/d. Now, I am lucky to even go neutral, and that's putting it lightly.
My overall kill/death ratio is somewhere around 2.1 (give or take). The k/ds of the players who I am matched against are 1.5, 2, and 3, whereas the k/ds of the players on my team are .9 to 1.2 (at the highest). Can someone please explain to me how this is fair? Way back, the k/ds of my opponents and teammates alike typically ranged from .8 to 1.3, but as of June 2016 they are more than double these values.
Some of you will argue that I was never good at the game to begin with if I cannot compete against players who share my skill set. You may be right, but why should that matter? At the end of the day, Destiny is supposed to be a casual shooter, and as such I should not be forced to play my heart out every single match against players who are just as good if not better than me.
Another argument some of you will make is that the only way to truly improve at a game is to play against difficult opponents. What backwards logic. How am I supposed to improve as a player when the anger and frustration brought upon by difficult opponents negatively affect my performance in game? The truth is that you can only improve against weak opponents, not strong ones. It is the same principle in MMOs: you start off fighting lower tier enemies until you are strong enough to fight the higher tier ones. In Destiny's multiplayer, if you possess an overall 1.5 k/d or higher, there is simply NO room for improvement because you are only as strong as Bungie thinks you should be. Essentially, the only way up is down.
"But Marc, SBMM finally gives below-average players the chance to compete. You shouldn't be allowed to pull 2 and 3 k/ds every match--that's just unfair to everyone else!"
While that may be true for below-average players (the minority), you are literally alienating the rest of everyone else by forcing them to regress to the mean and re-normalize their k/ds against their will.
If Bungie is so avid about keeping SBMM in the game despite 90% of the player base blatantly objecting to it on the forums and otherwise, then they need to RESTRICT it to SPECIFIC playlists (i.e.: Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris) that are skill-based by nature. We, the Destiny community, should be given the option to play hyper-competitive matches at our leisure, not all the time. In addition, the only surefire way to resolve the connectivity crisis that is plaguing matchmaking right now is to 100% prioritize the best possible connections over skill. Doing so will make Destiny fun again, but most importantly, doing so will MAKE DESTINY GREAT AGAIN!
TL;DR -- Skill-Based Matchmaking has destroyed this game because it favors the minority of players yet excludes the majority, forcing them into ultra-competitive matches without taking into consideration casual play styles and optimum connections. In that regard, Bungie needs to either abolish or restrict SBMM to playlists such as Iron Banner and Trials so that the Crucible can be the light-hearted experience that it once was.
EDIT 6/29: So many "you shouldn't be pulling 2 and 3 k/ds every match because that's unfair for us casual players!!" comments. I guess I should have known what to expect.
Clearly some of you have short attention spans and did not actually read my post. By catering to the noobs, you alienate the people who actually perform consistently well. Why should players whose k/ds exceed 1.5 need to suffer at the expense of everyone else? That is an emulation of socialism, and it hasn't worked in a single country.
One other thing I would like to clear up is that I don't want Bungie to get rid of SBMM across the board so that I can pub stomp everyone again. I want them to RESTRICT SBMM to specific playlists so that the Crucible is not ultra-competitive everywhere we go.
Lastly, even if I did go back to getting 25, 30, or 40 kills a match, I'd probably lose anyway. Any time I did exceptionally well in Year 1 was most likely when the rest of my team did exceptionally poor. It's just the way the universe works.

In my humble opinion connection should always be the priority. I personally do not care or mind if every match I get put into are sweaty so long as I can damage my opponent as I should be able to. Right after two patches ago (2.3.0?) the lag and hit detection have been atrocious. This makes playing PvP irritating and feels like a waste of time.

Remember halo reach? They should make it at least optional like it was in reach
-
No, it hasn't. Stop being a useless sheep.

Here's a hint. Patrol cosmodrome no sweat.

'I only like this game when I can get easy wins against weaker players. Im not playing anymore.'

1 AntwortenDoes anyone remember the insane latency in Y1? Anyone at all?

2 AntwortenIts simple... Have some kind off Ranked and Non-ranked system. So people will have a choice on what they want to do. I played PVP alot before the SBMM, but since then I quit playing PVP just because the matches are not "fun" to play anymore (for me). I understand the SBMM... but yeah... I wouldn't mind for it to go away.
-
My only issue is that I play from a different location somewhere and I aim and react incredibly better when I play from there, so SBMM kicks me in the ass when I go back home.

SBMM creates more lag. Simply the only reason it needs to go.

1 AntwortenMatchmaking sucks! On my main account its always bad, im the only one on my team getting 10+ kills and going positive all while the other team trounces around like its not a problem. Slow matchmaking times and lag turned me off from playing on a regular basis. On my secondary account, which i made to try and have fun is already messed up. Im barely above 130 light level and im playing all my tier 1 friends who i know are absurd at the game. I dont even have a high kd, just a stupidly good win ratio. Pretend that secondary account was a new player to the game who happened to get favored in matchmaking with a good team, but they happened to just be mediocre at best, winning most of their games early on because of it. Then as time goes on (like 1 day later :o) and you find yourself against people beyond your capabilities, well beyond in fact. That would hands down make me sell my game or never play pvp again, as well as never recommend it to my friends. At least in year one you matched a huge pool of people, some amazing, some good and some bad, even some really bad. At leas then matchmaking was quick, and connections didnt suck. That day will never return.

If a player with a. 9 k/d is in the same skill level as players with k/ds of 2.0 or higher than we need to redefine the definition of skill level. And now comes the little stat brats checking and saying "but your k/d is .8 (or whatever it is because IDGAF what it is).

Although I share some of the same feelings mentioned in your post, my main issue is the increased latency. Choosing any match without an emphasis on connection while running a p2p system is just stupid. Go ahead and match me with people from Mexico because they have the same KD and combat rating all you want, but one of us is going to have an advantage due to latency. I've been in countless matches in the same lobby of players where I come out of a 6,8,12 or 16kd match and then struggle to get a 0.67. The 0.67 matches I'm getting shot behind cover and seemingly 2 shot by Mida without hearing a shot fired. The 16 matches I'm pulling off 4 person melee multi-kills with 2% health the whole time. Neither one of these matches shows my true skill. Why even save clips for montages and to watch later when lag is so rampant? You have no idea how that insane multi-kill looked to those you killed. For all you know you endlessly teleported across the map the whole time. People can try to defend SBMM all they want due to "fairness", but any method of matchmaking that induces even the slightest bit of latency is an absolute joke. Using a .8 second ttk primary with .5 seconds of latency??? Lol... I won't even get into the ohk specials with the same 400-500ms of latency.

We all hate it and agree SBMM is cancer Yet Bungie dont give a shit What kind of developer insists on implementing something that is so universally hated??!

18 AntwortenI don't think the players players you were pub-stomping this time last year would have considered those matches "casual". I swear, EVERY single post on this subject is always about the same thing once you scratch below the surface and get past the excuses and the rationalizations: I'm good. The game OWES me effortless success. Everyone else should have to struggle and sweat...but not me. I'm special. No you're not. You just went from beating the crap out of players beneath your level of ability, to having to finally face up to people who can give you a real game. If you're a competitor....you rise to the challenge. If you're not....you slink off and whine about it like a schoolgirl who didn't get the pony she wanted for Christmas.

2 AntwortenBearbeitet von Milk: 6/28/2016 7:54:15 PMConstant complaints ruined Destiny little n*gga. Not SBMM. It may have played a part, but whiners are to blame for the state of the game.

5 AntwortenBearbeitet von A Lonely Grunt: 6/29/2016 12:28:54 AMSBMM is not the problem it is just that bungie focused too much on crucible when it was supposed to be a small side event. Which means they did not plan to have a good internet for it.

I like meatballs, meatballs are good. I like cheese, cheese is good. Eddy see that? Good boy Eddy.

Fully agree. BUMP.

You didn't even mention LAG. I would have liked to see that in here.
-
l.a.g.g.e.r.s. EVERYWHERE!!! No one would care about them if they didn't have god mode on! They're bullet sponge gods that take 3 reloads to hurt and then they kill you in 1 burst. Why can't you fix your netcode or at least fix the matchmaking so we never get them if we green bar?
-
The priority should be to tackle the issue of lag. This would create a far more enjoyable experience for all players: experienced or not. Only when the connections are stable and consistent can any discussion on 'skill' even be credible.

2 AntwortenIf the below average are the minority, why is there less lag in the below average tiers than in the above average tiers? The only 2 reasons I can think of are: 1) you are wrong and it is not the minority who benefit. It only seems like a minority of people because of a small number of persistent whiners on the forum. There are some posts that appear again Andy's again which seem to have a lot of replies, but they are from the same people including the original poster replying to almost every comment to boost his own replies Or 2) a lot of the lag in the upper tiers is a result of the players not the matchmaking system. I don't mean the connection speed of individual players, but a minority of deliberate laggers being concentrated in the upper tiers, people streaming which slows connections, people playing at off-peak times when there is no one in their time zones, people watching streams / Netflix between or during matches, fire teams with people on different continents (this will break cbmm as well). I am sure there are more reasons if you think about it

6 AntwortenBearbeitet von Lil_The_Myth: 6/28/2016 7:29:33 PMLess and less people play the game every day that's why it takes longer to get matches not because of sbmm I see 3-4 red bars a day instead of 3-4 red bars per game after Bungie stated they switched back to cbmm but good fan theory Your win loss has always been negative you sit in a corner and you probably rage quit if you got more then 3 deaths
-
Bungie needs to remove sbmm from the game.
-
Eh I just wish they'd separate it like they did back in the Halo days with ranked/unranked playlists. That way using non-meta gear doesn't mean getting completely destroyed by tryhards. And yes I know the casual playlists in Halo did still use sbmm. But they were much more relaxed with the connection criteria.

1 AntwortenTo everyone saying "yea well it's not fair to the below average players if your stomping them"... Well two things... They deserve to get stomped it's how you get better, and no matter what even now they're getting stomped. You go into a 3v3 playlist with a 2kd, your opponents will all be 1.5+ whilst your teammates are .5-1.0. This is how bungie makes it "fair" when in the end the below average on your team are just getting stomped on by the other team. So no matter what the below average players are going to get stomped, hence their title: below average.
