Pure light is something that is connected through all entities. However, guardians can utilize their ghost to alter this light into the three basic elements. I saw somewhere on YouTube that it's something like a prism. You put your light through it and it changes or as Tevis (I believe maybe it was Cayde) twists your light. I also heard its like a membrane between dimensions. There are pieces of grimoire that stats the vex can move through the void and fwc's machine can see through it.

Dark matter/ anti-matter/ space magic.

So in science the void is the vacuum of space with an absence of observable matter. In destiny however the void is kind of like the concept of dark matter. It's described as just a different kind of light that fills the space between. So yah basically dark matter and dark energy which is named such because we can't measure or observe it yet but we can infer its existence from it effect on the observable universe
