Totalitarian regimes of the last century succeeded by using force, cruelty, and a generous amount of historical revisionism. Since that's already been done before, statists and progressives of the present use a combination of guilt and social stratification to gain control. Historical revisionism is still in the playbook. Direct cruelty reinforced by a Gulag won't do the trick. So they lather themselves up with good intentions and "social justice" in order to control your behavior.
