Once you find the best spots to place them you'll know why it's leading on the board. My favourite is throwing two at the wall close to eachother, instant death if you get caught even with overshields on unless they lagging. I've wiped entire teams with carefully placed grenades they are so much fun. I like trip mines aswell.
