Effective Sniping Requires: Mobility, a steady hand, good hand-eye coordination, and superb aim.
Effective Shotgunning Requires: Situational Awareness, Quick Reactionary time, and the ability to prioritize targets.
Now let me say this, I'm not saying shotgunning is harder then sniping. The average sniper is better then an average shotgunner. But a good shotgunner is definitely better then most snipers.
Sniping isn't as easy as it looks, but you have to look at a few things.
If you put a sniper at one end of the smaller hallway and a group of 4 on the other, a good sniper would have no problem taking them out 9/10 times that situation happens.
Now
If you put a shotgunner in a room with multiple exits with four enemies around him, they have to worry about a few things.
1. How many enemies are here
2. What equipment do I have to help me survive
3. Which enemy is closest, and which presents the biggest threat.
4. Is there anyway to get out of this alive, if not, how many can I take down.
Now before people attack me saying I posted this because I can't snipe, I usually play on striker titan, and shotguns compliment the class well, also because titan skating is extremely effective once learned. (As seen here https://youtu.be/3zuv1awyl0w)
Because the amount of hatemail I get for titan skating up to people at 100 MPH and sticking the barrel of my shotty down thier throat is ridiculous. (No I don't use Juggernaut, Shoulder Charge builds up way to much speed for me not to use it, I dont tank the shots, I just move fast enough to disorient people)
Basically, in terms of learning curve.
Good Sniper > Good Shotgunner > Average Sniper > Average Shotgunner

You forgot movement fundamentals and agility, how will you close the gap if you don't know how to get to the enemy the quickest way while taking the least damage?

Lol anyone who agrees with this is such a sad player XD

Bearbeitet von Forum Vethi: 4/21/2016 7:56:34 PMI get so much hate for defender shotgunning. And I don't camp. I push SUPER aggressively.

It also depends on your play style. Some people snipe and shotgun differently. Some wait around corners, others stare at a wall for the entire match, hoping for prey to come by. I find both equally complicated and challenging though. Throughout the thorn shotgun meta, I used a mixture of the two, as I do now. PvE is another story though. I never use shotguns in PvE anymore, unless I'm doing VoG with whatever it's called. Shotguns were nerfed too hard damage wise

And using a sidearm as way more fun than them both ;)

Bearbeitet von Darches: 4/21/2016 7:52:06 PMSmall reticle on small target (sniper on head) = death at any range Small reticle on large target (sniper on body) = near death at any range Large reticle on small target (shotgun on head) = tickle at close range Large reticle on large target (shotgun on body) = death or near death at close range Snipers don't take any more skill than shotguns but are far more effective IMO. Bodyshots are particularly OP. Snipers have more range, accuracy, and damage capabilities. I've stopped shotgunning altogether in crucible because they're so ineffective these days. I routinely mow down shotgunners with TLW, which is also OP AF. Arminius works well too.

i Approve!

1 AntwortenI wouldn't say one is harder than the other for sure, but snipers who bitch about shotguns need to spend some time with a boomstick. Getting a high KDR is much harder with a shotgun. You are in the other team's face. Lots of trades with shotguns, unless you know what you're doing. I use both extensively and they're pretty equal in skill.

6 AntwortenI don't see the comparison here, snipers take a decent amount of practice before your getting headshots often . shotguns takes advantage of close areas with a instant ttk against primaries and require almost no skill that wouldn't be gained using primaries.
-
Also not noted is that to be a good sniper, you have to have the basic ability to use a controller and you are considered a master.

This is true

2 AntwortenBeing a good shotgunner using the Chaperone is something I'm trying to achieve. I have a lot of work to do!

Bearbeitet von Redwood: 4/21/2016 7:28:18 PMI consider myself a pretty good shot gunner. I almost always run the chaperone and can effectively take out group enemies with head shots. 1v4 is hard, but doable. I rarely get blindsided by anyone, except a sniper across the map to the back occasionally and I rarely lose shotgun vs. shotgun duels. Edit: I'm a decent sniper, but I don't find it fun at all. Long range combat just bores me so I tend to stray away from scout and sniper rifle. I always love having a good sniper for a teammate though, I appreciate their skill and finesse with the long rifle.

Nope it's much easier coming from s guy who uses both depending on the map shot gunning is much easier
-
Yep, engaging the enemy takes more skill than standing still from a distance. Agreed.
-
Agreed, it's easier to pick up vs a sniper but its harder to be great with vs a sniper

2 AntwortenTitle - Shotgunning is harder than sniping. First paragraph - "Now, I'm not saying shotgunning is harder than sniping..."

Idk, it seems to me like different people have different skill sets, i could run around the crucible all day with a sniper and i would never kill anyone, i've tried, getting kills with a shotgun has always been easy for me, you just pull the trigger and they die. Mind you, i get most of my kills with my primary - i don't main a special.

Bearbeitet von Rokon: 4/21/2016 6:41:31 PMSnipers also take into consideration situational awareness and target priority. TF2 for example does this especially. Sniper has to pick important classes so that his team can push effectively. How do you do that? You kill the healer. The problem with Destiny is just that there's no definite roles, and anyone can do anything. That makes the Sniper role less effective because anyone can do it. Another issue is that a lot of the maps cater to Shotgun users, so you see more of them; that's probably the reason why people have an issue in the first place. There's not as much Sniper-friendly maps, but they exist and when you get killed by a Sniper in those maps, you understand why that happened; it's reasonable to assume there's a Sniper in such a large map that you don't think twice about it; you can just break LoS and move on. I think both Shotgunner and Sniper take equal amount of skill, however, environment and combat influences how both are played.

6 AntwortenThe problem with all the "pro snipers" in this game is that they all play on 3-4 sensitivity so they're actually complete trash. I can tell you as someone who has used both a sniper and shotgun extensively that shotgunning is much more difficult with the current state of shotguns. They are far less reliable than they used to be, and sometimes they'll just fire a blank shot that does no damage. It's also much easier to outgun a shotgunner with a primary than a sniper, and also much easier to gang up on one when he rushes. A good shotgunner also has to play on at least 6 sensitivity so he can have good turning speed, so they have better joystick control as well (I play on 8 sensitivity).
-
3 AntwortenAgreed However...90% of the maps cater to close quarters combat, giving shotguns an extra edge. I don't use shotguns often and when I do I go full on dirty mode and use an invisibility build.

2 AntwortenOk all your 'effective' points can apply to both you do realise that right ?!

1 AntwortenShotguns for life And i kinda suck at sniping

5 AntwortenWhat if I'm using Universal Remote and 1k stare?
-
I have found that Warlock using focused burst jump perk is soooo good as a shotgun tank class. Everyone uses blink jump. But when playing cqc it's so easy to float above everyone and shotgun people to death. Many people simply aren't expecting you to be 10 feet above them when coming around the corner. Also, Universal Remote ftw.

18 AntwortenFusion rifle takes more skill than both.
