It depends on the situation, and fighting style. For example, short swords are best used in shield wall formations, which is why Greek, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and Viking swords were most often short one handed broadswords. Katana, and great swords would be useless in shield walls, they really need two hands, or are too long for the clusterfück.
