How close together were they. Time wise.
There is a cool down
I'm usually around one exotic per 7 or 10 coins. But long long term
Short term I sometimes go 15-20 without, then a bunch close together
If they were too frequent then exotics would be pointless.

The cool down is a myth. It's been disproven countless times. Just a couple days ago I killed two taken ultras on Earth patrol not even five minutes apart and got an exotic from both of them.

From reading elsewhere... The cooldown is between using 3oC when you DON'T get a drop. And the cooldown is proportional so let's say you get a 10% buff in the chance for an exotic with a 3oC. If you wait the whole cooldown you get the full 10%, if you wait half the cooldown you only get 5% but that is still 5% on top of what the chance was before and with it being RNG that might still give you an exotic. But there is no official data from Bungie so a lot of this is unconfirmed and just supported by experience.

It's all unconfirmed. It's just guesses and rumors. I've also used them a couple minutes apart and got an exotic from the second one (once I got two from the second one). I've seen countless theories about cooldown timers and all sorts of ideas. People swear by every one of them. It's just guessing and they always get disproven.

There is always a chance of getting an exotic using a 3oC no matter what the time between them. The existence of a cooldown is from the people who used to use the kill yourself cheese and farm exotics and after experimenting when it was nerfed that using 1 at a time with at least 10 minutes between seemed to get the best results. But like you said it's unconfirmed. Another suggestion is to use one every 3 strikes when doing the playlist and obviously that's way over 10 minutes between each one. The article I read saying that even suggested it was Bungie love of hidden number easter eggs so the 3 of 3oC and the fact the buff logo had a roman numeral 9 on it. So once every third strike, once every third ultra kill and so on but again nobody is certain. In the last 2 weeks I've hardly used any as I spent all my coins on ammo synths for faction rep so maybe only one coin every couple of days per character if I'd remember and I would say my drop rate is a lot better than the average 1 in 7 or so.
