When Bungie first announced that players would no longer be spawning into 3v3 matches with special ammo, I was actually kind of excited about that. I'm a mediocre sniper at best, so I was happy to hear the game might be tilted slightly in my favor.
But after playing Trials for a couple of weeks, I hate it.
Honestly, it's not so bad in Skirmish or Salvage. People tend to use primary weapons more often in those game modes anyway. But in Trials, your life is so much more valuable, so you will do anything to get an edge to make your opponent die first. There is no respawn to help you regroup and adapt. It's cut throat, and I like that. But you need special weapons (and ammo) to compete.
Right now the problem with Trials is twofold.
(1) Limiting special ammo has turned Trials into a game of momentum. If you get slaughtered on the first round before you can pick up special, there is a good chance you may never have special ammo for the rest of the match. Before you could come back in the second round with a new strategy, now if you're down 0-1, you're worried about how you can possibly challenge their snipers now that they have special ammo and you don't.
(2) There is too much variation in each round now. We have the weird outlier first round with no special, the second round where only one team might have special, with the heavy round soon after. By that point you may STILL not have any special ammo. But the real problem here is that there is too much variation between each round. It makes it very difficult for a losing team to adapt and regroup when each round will be very different from the previous one. If there is no repetition or even playing field with each round, it's simply too chaotic.
Bungie limited special ammo in order to help balance the game. Elimination and Trials are so unbalanced right now it's ridiculous...
[Edit]
I want to add that this whole problem could probably be avoided if all primaries were significantly buffed relative to special weapons. As it stands, primaries have received a net nerf since day 1, and now they are so weak that special weapons are the only good option for competitive play.
Also, I'm not complaining because I'm getting wrecked in Trials. I AM definitely getting wrecked most of the time, but that's not my issue. I'm complaining because Bungie failed to fix the problem they originally set out to fix: the primacy of special weapons in 3v3 matches.

7 AntwortenThe fix should of been the other way round. You spawn with special ammo but that's then all you get. Forces people to use it carefully as intended but you can't camp it out waiting for more to spawn.
-
They just need to get rid of the tricks around it
-
3 AntwortenSpecial ammo was never the problem... All special weapons were perfectly balanced when 2.0 dropped. Pulses needed less range and autos needed the little buff they got. If that were to happen, crucible would be balanced.
-
1 AntwortenI like the change But when it comes to 3v3 it makes special ammo even more important. Basically if you don't get the special ammo you are at a huge disadvantage. I would say he who controls the special ammo, wins!
-
8 AntwortenSolution. Train with nlb. Grab good shot gun. That way, you always have a sniper and a shotgun if you get special. Only problem is your crucible k/d will suffer at first. I'm training with no land beyond and my k/d has dropped so much, I'm about to cry. But I just finished my first game where I had 4 kills with it. Bow down to me
-
2 AntwortenPeople keep missing the other huge obvious problem. Year 2 no land beyond. Primary sniper. Where is the primary shotgun, universal remote? Its late to the year 2 party.
-
The problem is icebreaker converting 6 rounds into 18 after round one and ice breaker can one hit u like regular crucible it is bs
-
Step 1: Equip ANY sidearm for round 1 Step 2: At the end of round 1 switch to shotgun/sniper Step 3: You circumvented Bungies ammo change! Yay for you! Now you can rest your thumbs from writing whining forum posts!! :D
-
1 AntwortenThe best way to fix it would be...after each round you lose all your special ammo and start each round at 0. Even ICEBREAKERS start at 0.
-
Why don't we just strip the guardians naked and take away everything? That way they can run around the map and -blam!- each other.
-
There never was a problem with special ammo, or special weapon usage, just a problem with snipers being able to get kills relatively easily despite taking incoming from primaries. Shotties are next to useless now and can be countered by primary/melee/grenade combos very easily. Snipers rule. Hence so dull.
-
I called it. Not the right way to go about it.
-
1 AntwortenMake round one and two only primary, round 3-heavy round spawn with special. Solved
-
If you don't have icebreaker do like me, side arm, end of round swap to snipe or other special and here you go, free special ammo...
-
I find the special limit good Reason why is trials is a snipe fest with most trials maps having LONG paths or halls making the enemy team just set up in the back and wait no planning or any coordination just find an opening and wait. Now groups with actual coordination and planning can prevent that. Just because your last word aim is awful and you're too well adjusted to sniping then thats you're fault. Plus with the Icebreaker glitch makes special ammo very abundant or just use an invective. Frankly this makes trials little better imo
-
I've said it to the NERF callers once, and I'll say it again. Be careful what you wish for!!!
-
I'm more mad about the icebreaker.
-
Patient zero of the nerf epidemic everyone
-
1 AntwortenNope. Trials is WAYYYYYY better. The snipe whoring is kept to a minimum.
-
They should just lock special and heavy once the game starts. Or failing that, eliminate all special ammo after each round, like they do for heavy at the end of that round. Then again on games where we get special and win round one, I do like running around with 12 sniper bullets ...
-
2 AntwortenIt's more annoying that everyone is using the glitch. They're better off just putting the special ammo back in.
-
I agree, the ability to use NLB or Icebreaker in the first round just negates the whole purpose of having no special, coupled with the fact that if you begin with a sidearm equipped, you can die deliberately, change to whatever special of your choosing, get a teammate to revive you, (or wait until 1st round is over and swap out then) hey presto, special ammo. I tend to run shotgun (namely 4th horseman) because it suits the way I like to play, and it's a great weapon for dropping any super, given the chance, but this leaves me, and anyone else who has a similar playstyle or doesn't like to snipe at a starting disadvantage if the opposition is wielding NLB or Icebreaker, or using the sidearm glitch. I could use the glitch too, as could everyone, but we shouldn't have to, bungie should either remove the patch, fix the glitch and remove regen ammo for icebreaker, stop NLB being a primary, or let everyone spawn with limited special for each round, no pickups.
-
1 AntwortenJust wipe special ammo for the start of every round, it can still spawn the same during rounds, people can still use invective, but it's slow at regenerating ammo and it'll have 0 at the round start. And if sidearms become too prevalent, lower the amount of ammo they spawn with so they are used as a 'sidearm' and not a 'special', as was their intention.
-
I find the problem is that they limit it while straight up saying nah sidearms will still spawn with ammo wink wink. Either limit sidearms, prevent any ammo regen/weapon swapping to keep ammo or leave people spawning with it.
-
2 AntwortenBut Bungie never said that was the problem they wanted to fix. They said specifically in the update the only issue they wanted to fix was people being sniped in the first 5 seconds of a round/match.
-
I actually really like Trials now. Sure, there are exploits, but Ice Breaker and Invective aren't exactly the best weapons to use, especially in Trials. You have to aim with sidearms, so I haven't had a huge problem with the first round or so. I'm pretty mediocre at Trials, and the first week I tried with the patch my team went 8-0. We lost because we went up against the same team twice, and they were really good.
