Based upon your use of "too literal," I imagine you are mostly speaking about the 2nd Amendment. It isn't taken too literal, its taken for what it is, putting the power of physical force, the only true power, into the hands of the people. Tyranny isn't simply an archaic anachronism, but a possible reality that sits in direct contradiction to what this country was founded on. Its the second Amendment that allows us, to keep it in check.

Having a written document provides a point of reference and prevents time from allowing a lie to be passed off as truth over generations.

Having a constitution is fine, but ours needs some heavy editing as much of it is no longer relevant in modern times, or needs to be updated to fit the times. Rewriting it in more modern language would probably be useful too so there's less debate about interpretation of certain amendments.
