An Arizona lawmaker who believes the Earth is 6,000 years old is the new chairwoman of the state Senate committee that oversees education-related legislation.
Republican Sen. Sylvia Allen of Snowflake has a gift for going viral with statements that would be edited out of most school textbooks:
- Buying into conspiracy theories surrounding "chemtrails" -- exhaust from aircraft -- and suggesting the government is manipulating the weather.
- Sharing her opinion that church attendance should be mandatory, during a legislative debate on whether concealed weapons should be allowed in public buildings (she voted for the bill).
- Declaring the Earth "has been here 6,000 years," during a debate over allowing access to public lands for mining and other purposes.
Senate President Andy Biggs on Monday named Allen to lead a committee that acts as a gatekeeper for education-related legislation, such as Common Core and spending. Allen succeeds Sen. Kelli Ward, who resigned last week to run full-time in next year's GOP primary against Sen. John. McCain.
"She understands what Arizona students and parents need in our education system," Biggs said in a prepared statement. "She is a very experienced legislator and I know she will do a wonderful job."
Allen said her goal is "to highlight the incredible teachers who are the reason for our children's success. I also want to focus on parents' responsibility in their children's education."
This is exactly why it's dangerous to let people "have their own opinions" and not challenge them with reality and the truth. They end up running our government.

7 AntwortenI believe the most humane thing to do to all creationists, homophobes, and anti-vaxxers is to deport them to the Middle East and find a better home for their children. We should be raising a generation of children that believes in progress, democracy, and well-supported truths over what their parents say.

61 AntwortenReligion should just be kept out of school and government altogether. If someone wants to blatantly deny facts and call that a belief system fine, but teaching it to youth or using it to run a country is idiotic and holding our species back. People should be allowed to believe what they want but denialism is becoming a real problem for the advancement of modern technology and society. Religion has no place in a space/environment meant for learning or leading. People are so stubborn that they can't see what religion really is and has always been. A scam to gain power and money that the churches of all different faiths, in particular the Christian church, have been using to keep people obedient. Religion was first used to explain what we didn't understand but during medieval times when life was shit, the promise of eternal life after death became quite promising and inviting. Churches arose and people found that they could use religion to gain power and money to become rich and live lavish lives. Even monarchs had to give in to the will of the churches and places like hell were created to keep the disobedient in line. My family is catholic and growing up going to CCD was the worst. They would threaten you with going to hell if you didn't go to mass in morning or follow their beliefs to the letter. Religion had its time and place but it's pointless now that we have science. The only way to fully get rid of it is if we take it out of the schools and government. God didn't create man; man created God. Also, you can't say, "I don't believe the earth is 4.54 billion years old." as that's not something you can believe in. It's fact. You can deny fact and say it's not real but you cannot say a fact is an opinion or a belief as it is a fact.
-
2 AntwortenThere's a difference between having opinions and denying what's true, an opinion is whether you like pizza, saying earth is 6,000 years old is idiocy.
