Let me preface this post by saying that being a teacher is not easy. I work in the Bronx, NY with 4th graders and the children are very behaviorally challenged. Constant attitude, disrespect, fighting, and arguing. Little to no parent involvement. I've seen multiple fights this year between students. Not a day has gone by where I didn't want to pull my hair out, until now.
I've changed my behavior plan from negative to positive based upon an RNG model based upon Destiny. I actually thought of this while I was playing. Students are no longer penalized for negative behaviors, but rewarded for positive behaviors. Students are rewarded points (marks) for doing correct behaviors such as listening, working hard, or being persistent. Students are required to reach "x" number of points each day to receive the daily reward (daily heroic). The daily reward is for individuals and randomly rotates each day. Rewards vary from a homework pass, to 15 minutes of laptop time, to lunch with the teacher, shots at the class basketball hoop or a homework pass.
The whole class also has a point total and a weekly reward (Nightfall) which is granted on Friday afternoons. If the class reaches its goal for class points by Friday, they get weekly reward. These rewards are random and usually range from, free homework for the weekend, class party Friday 8th period with snacks, movie time 8th period, or teacher comes to recess.
Since I have been using this model that focuses on positive behavior and has Destiny elements, my life in the classroom has been so much easier.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that all points progress is wiped each Monday and everyone starts fresh (weekly reset)
EDIT: for those criticizing saying this method of rewarding positive behavior has been around for a long time, I would love to see how you function in a class room of 25 students. The system I had been using rewarded positive behavior weekly, but it was never the focus of the entire plan. Students were penalized in addition to being rewarded. That part has been removed completely and the focus is entirely positive reinforcement.

You are a great teacher! I remember the teachers like you who figured out how to challenge me than condemn me. Great work!!!

1 AntwortenIf it's based on Destiny, surely the children who behave badly end up getting more and better rewards than the well behaved students. I bet the class clown got the first Gjallarhorn.
-
Bad behavior will be rewarded then too, right?

I discarded the quest where you had to get 6+ kills in the crucible with certain weapons because I couldn't pass the quest to banshee-44. The quest just wouldn't pop up. I then realized that I couldn't get the quest back from the "abandoned quest" area. What do I do now? Is there a way to get the quest back?

Good on you for finding a better teaching method. Odd it came from destiny and not from your studies to become a teacher, but hey, can't argue with the results. Hope next semester goes well!

Sooo lunch with the teacher is like getting a sparrow horn on a nightfall right?

Negative attitude student loot: guaranteed A on a test

If this is truly based on the sweet RNG of Destiny, then shouldn't misbehaving kids get the better rewards. That's how this game works, don't it? Keep up the good work though. I wouldn't have the patience myself.

Bearbeitet von SwankyButters: 12/24/2015 8:36:30 AMI think it's a cool idea, better in your class room than in Destiny, cause in your class, you actually get things you can use and that actually mean something. I don't think the random thing is a good idea, cause I don't think gambling is a good thing to teach kids. I can say, the reason I hated school was I never really saw the point of what I was learning. For me, that was one of the biggest obstacle. As well, no one ever really notice what I was truly interested in. I was artistic, loved movies and video games. At that age, if there was a place I could go and learn how to make games and play or I could do art (I did do a bit of that but never saw a future in it) or learn how to make movies (which I didn't even know was a thing at that age) I would have been a great student. I thinks schools are blind in that area. They are not very good at showing you what you have to gain by all this work and the path it can take you. At least my school in Brooklyn never got that message across to me.

"Classroom of 25 students" Kek, try a classroom of 31 hormonal and rebellious 13-14 year olds, majority of them ghetto as hell! I'm one of these students, but I keep quiet and try to help the teacher as much as I can with dealing with assholes in my class. My point is I respect that you're keeping them occupied and learning, but don't act as if 25 4th graders is the worst thing to handle.

4 AntwortenI'm usually a lurker, so it takes a very specific kind of topic to get me to commit to comment. Why did you need a video game to teach you the concept of positive reinforcement? Should not all soon-to-be teachers know what that is before going into the workforce? It's also a better way of raising children, you reward good behavior. I can't help but judge by the quality of your post and its content, you should not be a 4th grade teacher. But that's probably what 4th graders in a Bronx school can expect I suppose.

Awesome that this is working out for ya, just don't start nerving stuff!

1 AntwortenYou know what would work even better? The back of my hand. "You said what, boy?!" THWAK!

I suck at school and this wouldn't help me. Life sucks right now

Your doing PB4L?
It sounds really cheesy. I've had that before.
you are simply using operant conditioning on your pupils. A proven and effective way to shape behaviour. But you didn't discover it. In fact my teachers used it on me. I did a good job and got a sticker for example. All you've really discovered is that Bungie is using operant conditioning on us. Shaping our behaviour using a reward system. You've now applied the same principles to your pupils and are getting positive results. Destiny is proof of just how effective positive reinforcement can be when applied correctly.

3 AntwortenAnd here I thought you were going to have them "dismantle mines.... yessssssssss, or fail."

1 AntwortenWow thats awesome man!!!! any negative comments about this is trash and those people don't have a heart. Any story thats a true success story involving kids is a win win. Congrats man i have come across stories like this about people using destiny in their life and it just makes me like the game that much more.
