Let me preface this post by saying that being a teacher is not easy. I work in the Bronx, NY with 4th graders and the children are very behaviorally challenged. Constant attitude, disrespect, fighting, and arguing. Little to no parent involvement. I've seen multiple fights this year between students. Not a day has gone by where I didn't want to pull my hair out, until now.
I've changed my behavior plan from negative to positive based upon an RNG model based upon Destiny. I actually thought of this while I was playing. Students are no longer penalized for negative behaviors, but rewarded for positive behaviors. Students are rewarded points (marks) for doing correct behaviors such as listening, working hard, or being persistent. Students are required to reach "x" number of points each day to receive the daily reward (daily heroic). The daily reward is for individuals and randomly rotates each day. Rewards vary from a homework pass, to 15 minutes of laptop time, to lunch with the teacher, shots at the class basketball hoop or a homework pass.
The whole class also has a point total and a weekly reward (Nightfall) which is granted on Friday afternoons. If the class reaches its goal for class points by Friday, they get weekly reward. These rewards are random and usually range from, free homework for the weekend, class party Friday 8th period with snacks, movie time 8th period, or teacher comes to recess.
Since I have been using this model that focuses on positive behavior and has Destiny elements, my life in the classroom has been so much easier.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that all points progress is wiped each Monday and everyone starts fresh (weekly reset)
EDIT: for those criticizing saying this method of rewarding positive behavior has been around for a long time, I would love to see how you function in a class room of 25 students. The system I had been using rewarded positive behavior weekly, but it was never the focus of the entire plan. Students were penalized in addition to being rewarded. That part has been removed completely and the focus is entirely positive reinforcement.

Possitive reinforcement conditioning has been around forever.

You forgot micro transactions.... Teachers gotta eat!

tl;dr teacher discovers exploitative reward system works on kids as well as it does on adults.

2 AntwortenYou don't type like a teacher. The way you go about your sentences strikes me as someone under the age of 16. I call BS on this.

12 AntwortenLunch with a teacher is a reward? That is more like getting a legendary engram only to decrypt it and it being a rare.
-
I'm sorry but you said homework pass twice
-
Thinking of adding a layer of RNG to the daily rewards. Example Daily Goal: 12 points Daily Reward: 2 shots at class basketball hoop + chance at no homework (flip a coin)

2 AntwortenYou should allow a student to take another students A and infuse it into their B if they have enough marks, giving them an A The original A student is destroyed in the process but w/e

3 AntwortenBearbeitet von Blackjack 357: 12/24/2015 3:44:36 PMI like this idea. How long have you been using it? What percentage of your students would you say have changed behavior because of it? The only bad portion of it I see is the Nightfall concept and only for a single reason: if the CLASS meets a point number, EVERYONE gets the reward. If there is a student who does not earn any points, do they get rewards, or is there a minimum point value that they have to contribute before they are eligible? Also, do the teachers not normally go out for recess?

this is not Destiny, this is basic psychology. this is operant conditioning on a mixed variable ratio reward system and is generally considered the most effective way to facilitate sustained behavior change. i am glad to hear that your student's behavior has improved. However, i wish more teachers were familiar with cognitive/developmental psychology.

1 AntwortenAwesome idea! My spouse is a teacher btw, so major props to you for the work you do. But... in the spirit of education we must always cite the correct source. Bungie just applied behaviorism to RNG. They didn't invent it, that was BF Skinner. They did utilize it effectively though, and it sounds like you have as well. Merry Christmas to you!

Are you going to add microtransactions later?

Just don't do the crucible reward system on them

15 Antwortenjust wait until they find the cheese spot in the back of the room...

Just a couple questions for you... 1. Have your students ever pushed you off the edge to achieve more points? 2. What if your students pull the Ethernet cable out? 3. Do your students ever parkour up the walls, through the ceiling, and onto the roof until you despawn?

you give hwk on weekends? those poor kids! :O

I couldn't be a teacher cause I would kill them lol. Kudos to you, you found a way to reach your kids and they are responding back in a positive manner. Doesn't matter who gets credit for the idea, I'm just glad there are still good teachers put there.

Lunch with the teacher and the teacher comes to recess? I'm sure you're cool and all, but how exactly are those two rewarding? Not hating, I'm just sincerely curious about those two. -
1 AntwortenJust curious, what grade are you teaching? I wouldn't really wanna get lunch with a teacher, I feel that'd be weird. Then again I'm in college lol

Great job, keep it up. Enjoyed the read and think its a magnificent idea.

A woman I love, but whose heart I broke is a teacher in the Bronx. I think it's outside the box interaction that garners the most positive interactions from students. I guarantee you are those kids favorite teacher they have or will have.

Great idea wish they could use your method

You are a great teacher! I remember the teachers like you who figured out how to challenge me than condemn me. Great work!!!
