Contracts for exclusive rights to certain content for 1 year. Sony had the foresight to make such an arrangement with Bungie/Activision, while Microsoft did not.

You're both right and wrong, Microsoft turned it down, as they did with CoD now. They are putting money into console exclusives instead of timed exclusives.

They were both offered their own set of exclusives, Microsoft said no. Would be interesting to see what the Microsoft ones would have been.
