I’m against all marriage. Marriage was invented as a means of transferring ownership of women from their fathers to their husbands, and while that is no longer literally true, a lot of the misogynistic ideas still present in marriage today stem from that. In addition, religion is still very much tied to marriage, and while not everyone who marries is religious (due to the legal benefits), religion has absolutely no place being tied to a legal union in a country that allows freedom of (and from) religion. Furthermore, while I acknowledge the legal benefits of marriage, we can change the system so that people can have those benefits without it being tied to the history of marriage and its ties to religion and misogynistic power structures. And lastly, I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I sure as fūck don’t need a legal document to prove to someone that I love them and am committed to them. The staggering divorce rate (especially in heterosexual couples) proves that marriage doesn’t keep people together if they don’t love and trust each other.
Edit: lol @ all the people who came in here expecting a lesbian to spew homophobic bullshit.
