Note: I would like to make clear that the statistics in paragraph 2 are not the main focus of the post. These statistics are merely meant to provide a numerical example for those who would like one. I realize that the amount of users surveyed is not optimal, and I will provide updates with better data every so often.
I've seen a considerable amount of people claim that the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are holding Destiny back. I'm not here to argue whether they are, or whether it's the players' faults for not upgrading. That's a different discussion for a different day. Today, I'm here to show why Bungie hasn't dropped last gen yet, and why it will be a little while before they do.
I collected some data, and out of 74 people, 4 were on 360, and 4 were on PS3. This equates to 10.810810810...%. That means that approximately 11% of the playerbase is on last gen. I did some research, and as of May 2015, approximately 20,000,000 people play Destiny. Granted, this number is outdated, and the 74 users from whom I collected data do not represent the entire playerbase. Anyway, this equates to about 2,000,000 people playing on last gen. Assuming that these 20,000,000 all pay $140 for all the year 1 content, that's $280,000,000 in sales from last gen alone. Granted, this number is likely inaccurate in relation to the current amount of people playing, but I think it works well enough to prove the point. Were Bungie to drop last gen support tomorrow, for example, they would be losing a significant sum of money.
I believe that Bungie is going to wait for a while before dropping last gen support so that more players can upgrade. I think that the most likely time for this to happen is with the release of Destiny 2. From a business standpoint, this would make the most sense. They could sell the next two or so small expansions on last gen, and it would give players another year to upgrade. By then, nearly the entirety of the playerbase will be on current gen, and it would be safe for Bungie to drop last gen support.

Edit: I gathered more data from my poll, this time from 136 people. Out of those, 16 were on last gen. This equates to about 11.7647%. This is very close to my original number, and I predict that this percentage will stay in the range of 10-15%. I will update with more data.

I doubt there are even 1.5 million people on last gen right now. With almost all games coming out on next gen, most have jumped to the ps4, or XBO. Im not sure there will be destiny 2 or it will be just DLCs here on out, but there needs to be a cutoff soon.

1 AntwortenI also did some research and confirmed you're a little bitch.
jk I just wanted to say that
Your argument is only valid if you assuming there is no profit to be made. Next gen only is a HUGE selling point, and would definitely improve their reviews, as the hardware from last gen is holding the game back (there is no argument to be made on that front). It'd just be overall better for the game in the longrun, and would more than likely increase their sales either way. Profit off of one game<exponentially larger profit off of every game

3 AntwortenI thought they already said they are dropping it when destiny 2 comes out?
-
5 AntwortenUm the Zombie dance proves that old gen are incapable of handling some mechanics. IF WE DROP OLD GEN WE CAN GET COOLER DANCE MOVES. BUNGIE GIMMIE COOLER DANCE MOVES

Bearbeitet von CharacterZ3RO: 10/28/2015 12:24:51 AMIt's not 20 million players is 20 million characters made. So it's more like 7 million players with three characters each.

Did you know that last gen is pretty much confirmed to be dropped next year?
-
Old Gen hold about 20% of the sales of the base game.

I used to play Xbox 360 and I would like to say that it's pretty fun because so little people play it that you know about 75% of the other players. Also everyone there is usually pretty chill because there's not many top 1% players who are wrecking all of us. I just upgraded to a 1 like 5 days ago or so and I already miss the 360

1 AntwortenHow would you feel if you bought something at the same price as someone else but you only get it for a year?

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=Destiny Here are some numbers. Don't know if someone already posted it, I do not feel like reading all the posts.

This is no real complaint. But if I had the power of hindsight I wouldn't have upgraded. I upgraded purely for battlefield 4, and if anyone wants to bash bungie for their "broken" release they clearly never played that game. None of the ps4 games have given me the wow factor I quite expected, not in terms of graphics or frame rates or whatever, but in terms of gameplay and expansiveness. This isn't a complaint at the expansiveness of Destiny, as a game I feel whilst it could have been better I've definitely gotten my money's worth - I just expected some better games to come out in general and hoped developers would ditch last gen technology in order to create a more amazing experience, to know that I could conceivably share a remarkably similar experience on last gen at a fraction of the cost just to buy a better resolution does kind of make me wonder why I bothered.

3 Antworten10% really isn't a major amount of the player base. Also, with the technology being 10 years old now I have a feeling bungie will move on very soon, they won't wait. People will upgrade once they realize they have no choice, not the other way around. As to the people saying they can't afford it, technology is a harsh bitch, it doesn't wait just because you don't have the moment, eventually bungie will either have to move with the times of risks running on old tech.
-
2 AntwortenIf people really wanted to upgrade then they should upgrade to PC a decent PC will outlast any of these consoles
-
2 AntwortenSad part is though, old gen servers shut down next year. You're gunna have to upgrade sooner or later.

Bearbeitet von WhiskeyHotel: 10/27/2015 11:59:37 PMThe problem is though, if Bungie keeps skimping on content and dumbing everything down to make it run on old gen, a lot (and I do mean A LOT) of that revenue stream you just hashed out will diminish severely. I love this game myself, but it has to trend in a better, fuller direction if Bungie intends for the game to make it through its fully scheduled life cycle.

1 AntwortenI think the real question is what platform are you on and which platform are your friends on?
-
well they should its a shame that I cant play with my friends on old gen and they cant play with me. I have both ps3 and ps4 but would have to pay for both consoles. I say drop the old one. Destiny is empty already without this splitted community.
-
They've already got their money so no they wouldn't lose it. In fact if they don't drop last gen before the release of destiny 2 they will lose way more money than gain. Reason. Destiny 2 will suck just as bad as destiny 1 if they have to cut so much crap so last gen can run it. If they drop last gen and actually make it epic they will gain more of a following from people who haven't played yet on current gen than they would lose on old gen. Plus old gen people will keep playing year 1 and 2 stuff also buying stuff from tess meaning most likely to double their money if they drop last gen.. next.

I've been content with staying on last gen since Destiny came out and have appreciated their effort in supporting it. However, with all of this holiday's games coming in (looking at you, Fallout 4), I'm definitely planning on upgrading.
-
5 AntwortenDestiny was built with last gen in mind. The problems presumably stemming from this (for example, the pretty small environments) can't be fixed just by dropping last gen.
-
12 AntwortenYeah because 74 people is a sound sample
-
It's also probably because Destiny was a last gen game to begin with.

my body is ready

Lol 10% isn't that much. Considering that some of those 10% have upgraded to current gen since then, that number is lower now. By the time Destiny 2 comes out, it'll be even lower. Bungie should drop last gen and they most likely will. It's already being seen right now with other devs.
