Note: I would like to make clear that the statistics in paragraph 2 are not the main focus of the post. These statistics are merely meant to provide a numerical example for those who would like one. I realize that the amount of users surveyed is not optimal, and I will provide updates with better data every so often.
I've seen a considerable amount of people claim that the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are holding Destiny back. I'm not here to argue whether they are, or whether it's the players' faults for not upgrading. That's a different discussion for a different day. Today, I'm here to show why Bungie hasn't dropped last gen yet, and why it will be a little while before they do.
I collected some data, and out of 74 people, 4 were on 360, and 4 were on PS3. This equates to 10.810810810...%. That means that approximately 11% of the playerbase is on last gen. I did some research, and as of May 2015, approximately 20,000,000 people play Destiny. Granted, this number is outdated, and the 74 users from whom I collected data do not represent the entire playerbase. Anyway, this equates to about 2,000,000 people playing on last gen. Assuming that these 20,000,000 all pay $140 for all the year 1 content, that's $280,000,000 in sales from last gen alone. Granted, this number is likely inaccurate in relation to the current amount of people playing, but I think it works well enough to prove the point. Were Bungie to drop last gen support tomorrow, for example, they would be losing a significant sum of money.
I believe that Bungie is going to wait for a while before dropping last gen support so that more players can upgrade. I think that the most likely time for this to happen is with the release of Destiny 2. From a business standpoint, this would make the most sense. They could sell the next two or so small expansions on last gen, and it would give players another year to upgrade. By then, nearly the entirety of the playerbase will be on current gen, and it would be safe for Bungie to drop last gen support.

Edit: I gathered more data from my poll, this time from 136 people. Out of those, 16 were on last gen. This equates to about 11.7647%. This is very close to my original number, and I predict that this percentage will stay in the range of 10-15%. I will update with more data.

A sample of 74 people...... ?
-
20 million people don't play destiny dude there not active users there registered users I.E alpha/beta/demo users that never returned I'd say around 10 million play destiny and log in once a month no way in hell there's 20 active million players
-
It was a good effort, but you really can't make that call on the numbers without a sample size in the thousands. It's just not good statistics.
-
I appreciate you attempted to do research, but with a sample size of 74 people you can't draw any serious conclusions from that data, especially with how big Destiny's total player base is.

The Tl;dr was too long please make a Tl;dr

4 AntwortenI stopped reading when you said 74 people.

Bro this is very obvious information. They aren't going to drop last gen as long as there can be a profit made. And yeah last gen is holding destiny back...

22 AntwortenYou have had two years to save up. Get a job bum
-
Fuсk old gen save up money and get a new console bums
-
Old gen should and will be dropped for destiny 2.
-
I can't imagine last-gen being generally supported alongside current-gen for much longer. Another year and cross-platform releases will likely be current-gen only.
-
1 AntwortenThe sample size is so small you could preface this with: all numbers have a range of + or - 50%.

I'll be getting a next gen console next year. People can say all they want that last gen is holding things back, but seriously when it took nearly 3 years just for current gen to get a decent library that wasn't full of ports or "HD remakes" can you really blame the players on this shit? Who wants to pay $300-$400 to play a game they can play on a console they already own (and in the case of ps3's get to play online for free)? Xbox one has currently only one game I really want and that is MCC and PS4 maybe has 3-4. To me that isn't worth dropping $300+ for. That being said there are a lot of games slated for this and next year that really interests me and that is when I will drop some money to not only get a PS4, but also to get few games at that time.

Ive destiny 2 is for pc i would be so happy. Ive not then no more destiny for me😅

1 AntwortenBearbeitet von Aprovoked_Mango: 10/28/2015 1:38:50 PMCompanies are leaving old gen behind and its a case of having to deal with it. Old gen is limited to 10 year old tech and considering how far tech has come along in those years its a pretty big drawback. If that werent the case then you have to consider the time and effort it takes to work on both old and current gen, Dying light had the right idea and ditched old gen because it was a waste of resources that could be focused on current gen. All in all having companies cater to old gen is asking them to limit energies on current gen which is then unfair on the people that have upgraded. Whether people can afford to upgrade or not is a social/economics problem, not a gaming problem. There will always be people playing on old gen, some extreme casuals who just like to play every now and then, people who cant afford to upgrade etc but theyre a minority and gaming will cater to the majority. Destiny will abandon old gen most likely around september next year. More and more companies are focusing on current gen and leaving old behind, heck even the servers are being switched off. The pandering to old gen has limited current gen and its only now we're really seeing games that are truly made for current gen.

If I ran destiny. ttk would have been new gen only.

Bearbeitet von Syn Athde: 10/28/2015 9:41:25 PMI find it interesting that we have sites like destiny tracker and other similar sites that can accurately accumulate data from destiny's servers to let us know our own statistics. But, no one has yet to implement a system on the sites to let people know exactly how many people are playing on each system. I've been curious about this for a while now. I think the number of people on last gen systems are much greater than what this post is suggesting.

Bearbeitet von MaKEshiFT51: 10/28/2015 9:41:05 PMThey've already stated that Destiny 2 will NOT be for last gen systems. And since it's a year away, there's no need it should be.
-
Granted,
-
You need to poll a larger group of players before you come up with these statistics.
-
The previous generation consoles will be the only thing keeping Destiny afloat. Halo 5, Fallout 4, Battlefront. Those titles alone are only on current generation consoles. In a month from now, after the last of those titles go online, there will be a significant amount of players NOT on Destiny from current gen platforms. Therefore, Bunglevi$ion starts to look like geniuses for including PS3 and XB360 as they may be the only thing that keeps Destiny relevant for the next 6 months.

2 AntwortenNote: PS3 player, do not own a PS4 I hate to admit it because I really don't want to buy a ps4 but, the last gen is holding his game back...seriously I can't fathom what bungie could actually do if they created a game only for next gen, it would probably be glorious. It's time to let go of our PS3 and XBOX360...they are pushing 10 years old, in technology terms they are -blam!-ing ancient now.
-
Destiny 2 should be current gen only, I do love my 360, but the game runs so much better on the one and ps4, it's faster, clearer and just feels better.
-
It's not the player's fault. But having if on last gen is closing so many doors. But that's ok, the next full game will likely be only current gen.
-
in the contract between bungie and activision it is stated that Destiny 2 will be on current gen systems and possibly PC. but not last generation.

3 Antworten74 polled out of 20 million. That's some hardcore research right there.
