Note: I would like to make clear that the statistics in paragraph 2 are not the main focus of the post. These statistics are merely meant to provide a numerical example for those who would like one. I realize that the amount of users surveyed is not optimal, and I will provide updates with better data every so often.
I've seen a considerable amount of people claim that the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are holding Destiny back. I'm not here to argue whether they are, or whether it's the players' faults for not upgrading. That's a different discussion for a different day. Today, I'm here to show why Bungie hasn't dropped last gen yet, and why it will be a little while before they do.
I collected some data, and out of 74 people, 4 were on 360, and 4 were on PS3. This equates to 10.810810810...%. That means that approximately 11% of the playerbase is on last gen. I did some research, and as of May 2015, approximately 20,000,000 people play Destiny. Granted, this number is outdated, and the 74 users from whom I collected data do not represent the entire playerbase. Anyway, this equates to about 2,000,000 people playing on last gen. Assuming that these 20,000,000 all pay $140 for all the year 1 content, that's $280,000,000 in sales from last gen alone. Granted, this number is likely inaccurate in relation to the current amount of people playing, but I think it works well enough to prove the point. Were Bungie to drop last gen support tomorrow, for example, they would be losing a significant sum of money.
I believe that Bungie is going to wait for a while before dropping last gen support so that more players can upgrade. I think that the most likely time for this to happen is with the release of Destiny 2. From a business standpoint, this would make the most sense. They could sell the next two or so small expansions on last gen, and it would give players another year to upgrade. By then, nearly the entirety of the playerbase will be on current gen, and it would be safe for Bungie to drop last gen support.

Edit: I gathered more data from my poll, this time from 136 people. Out of those, 16 were on last gen. This equates to about 11.7647%. This is very close to my original number, and I predict that this percentage will stay in the range of 10-15%. I will update with more data.

Microsoft is the one dropping 360 support next year, so it's being taken care of

4 AntwortenIsn't black ops 3 the last "last gen console compatible game"? I feel I read that somewhere but I don't know where. But to go off of OP's post of saying "don't ditch last gen just yet" unfortunately the industry of game development is in fact changing and moving towards the current gen hardware and software (this is coming from someone who plans to take part in the industry once I'm done with college), so what does this mean? Old gen is unfortunately going to become obsolete in the near future. It's sad really, but it's inevitable. This isn't an argument statement, just a fact, and a really upsetting one. It's hard to make games work across generations of consoles. There's restrictions on old consoles that some current gen games cannot have in order to function. Particles, resolution, frames-per-second, hell even complete mechanics like dynamic shadows, weather, sunlight, and color saturation and hues all have restrictions on old gen that new gen just doesn't have problems with. New gen is just better all together to make games with now. Now, the business aspect of it. OP stated $280,000,000 worth of players are on last gen, while that's a large hunk of money, a LARGE hunk of money, there's is w higher chance than not (statistically) that those who are fans of game series will follow the series if its developers make decisions such as moving forward to the next generation of console. Just to give an example, look at halo 5: guardians, halo fans flocked to it! I can admit that when I heard halo 5 was going to be a "thing" (I know, very intellect, much vocabulary) I made a choice right then that I'd get an Xbox one just to play halo 5. That was when I worked as a waiter at a restaurant. So I know what it's like to not have too much money to blow on extravagant things like the latest generation of console (which at the time cost $349.99 plus tax). I saved to buy it and bought it on Black Friday. But enough about that, back to the other stuff. There's a bigger chance that if people who really "like" destiny will want to play it if a sequel comes out on current gen. And, to be honest, it will be better for the game if they did. They'll be able to do more without having to "dumb-down" the game functionality wise in order for it to perform as intended on last gen as it does on current gen. Also, they may even be able to make the game faster without having to separate their team into last gen and current gen developers (which most studios with cross-gen games do) in order to make the game for both generations. They'll instead have one full team working on one full game for one console, as opposed to two half-teams working on two consoles with one console lacking in processing power and lesser hardware/software in comparison to the other. In my personal opinion (which seems to be unpopular), it would be good for destiny to only be on current gen consoles. Think of how much better it would be?! Remember back when they announced dynamic weather, dynamic AI with strategies, Attack patterns, a patrolling that change due to time of day/weather/conditions/player actions? They could actually pull something like that off on current gen. Now, I know what some are thinking: "but random poster, assassins creed 3 & 4 did it! Why can't destiny?!" Well, to answer that: ubisoft was able to pull it off and look at the catastrophe that ensued. Game crashing, random glitches, boats floating into the ground and parting the sea during storms, clipping into the environment when it rained, weather changing from one to the other and back again in seconds (clear day-rain-clear day again). It was mortifying! But look at ac4 on current gen. Weather that's timed perfectly, gorgeous lighting, moving foliage, drip drying, it was a master piece! Then they screwed up with unity. Apologies for the long post, I swear this is it for me. But to finally wrap it all up, it would be good for destiny as whole to just move on to current generation and leave last gen behind. The game could be so much better, but developers are restricted to what they can do due to what they have to work with as far as consoles go. This wasn't really an argument against OP, just a statement (think of it as an essay you had to do in English class every grading quarter).

4 Antworten"Bungie should keep supporting 10 year old hardware because I don't want to save up for a new console and think everything should be designed around my needs and things shouldn't advance without me" Seriously, people still think hardware that can't rotate the orb on Touch of Malice should be supported? GTFO

1 AntwortenWhat I say to those people are respect your roots if it wasn't for older gaming consoles they wouldn't be playing on thier new xbone or ps4 today. I'd pick a nice nes over an xbone or ps4 anyday.
-
I'm still on ps3 and i have to admit were holding it back. I'm getting a ps4 next week. We had more then enough time to save up for a next gen console

Both consoles are now under 400. Come on over so Bungie can leave the old consoles behind and make bigger worlds at 60 frames per second.
-
Fair assumption, but they never claimed 20M played destiny. They claimed there were 20M registered accounts. If you look at the video game sales charts and Activisions shareholders report, the number of copies sold would be closer to 10M which based on your numbers would mean there are approximately 1M people who bought Destiny across the old gen systems. Still not a bad number, but when even Sony will stopped supporting the old gen systems soon, gaming companies should be reconsidering. That being said, the engine was designed for last gen so for them to upgrade it to current only will be a LOT of work and based on how large and convoluted their engine is, it's hard to be extremely difficult for them!

3 AntwortenSample size is far too small. Argument is invalid.
-
3 AntwortenThat doesn't quite work though. By that logic bungie should put destiny on game boy as the biggest selling console. It's not just about the size of that platform but also progression and doing new things that haven't been seen. By continuing to cater for the older systems bungie must build to the lowest common denominator but also they have to split their effort to work on 4 systems not 2. Dropping the old systems would allow more higher level focus on the new systems allowing them to do more for the game.
-
2 AntwortenSample size is waaaaayyyyy too small to mean anything at all. Nice idea, but it's meaningless. Old gen holds the game back. That is a fact.
-
Not sure about Ps3, but I'm pretty sure Xbox players will be forced to upgrade to Xbone within the next 6 months, whenever Microsoft decides to drop 360 support/services.
-
This is pretty pointless, all the guns we have now are just re-skins of the old gear just with different perks....all I'm hearing is....Bungie bring back my op perks.
-
It makes no difference how many people still play on old gen, the point is, it's holding destiny back! They've had nearly two years to upgrade now
-
Do they even make games for last gen anymore?
-
3 AntwortenBearbeitet von Sid: 10/29/2015 6:20:37 AMSample size is too small to draw an accurate conclusion. Better start saving for a current gen console either way since, it's only a matter of time until Sony and Microsoft stops supporting old gen.
-
May have to also add in the people who purchased destiny for last gen then bought a new gen after the upgrade deal and had to double pay for game.
-
I wish they would. It would kick me in the ass to buy a ps4
-
It won't be for long, from what I've read PS3 and Xbox360 will be losing online sometime next year

As stated in the bold heading, the data is not, and should not be, the focus of this discussion. The focus is, and should be, when Bungie stops supporting last gen consoles. It also seems that many of these people did not read the bold preface.
Note: I would like to make clear that the statistics in paragraph 2 are not the main focus of the post. Here's the thing last gen won't be dropped not because of the developer but the publisher. Last I checked I am still seeing Activision throw out games for it heck if I recall not to long ago they just dropped campaign mode and made black ops 3 for $50 dollars less on last Generation. Meanwhile EA, Ubisoft, and Rockstar along with first party publishers decided to take a step in the right direction and start current gen only support. So yeah Activision will continue to try to get to everyone's wallets while the smart business will move on with quality development.

Idc. Drop old gen

No, drop old gen.
