In the hard raid with some fellow LFGers earlier, doing Golgorath on my alt. My light level was 310 and I was using a 311 1000-Yard-Stare. My Black Spindle is only 295 light, hence why I wasn't using it. The Fireteam leader kept yelling about how we should be using Black Spindle because it does crazy damage and we wouldn't waste time reloading, and was getting particularly frustrated at me for not using it.
My question is: Was he right to? Even with the light reduction I would take by equipping the 295, would it still do more damage than the 311 Stare, assuming all other variables (like the amount of time I was crit-hitting Golg) stayed the same?
I would have tested it but a) the guy yelling at me was really annoying and I didn't want him to be right and b) I'm too lazy to work it out myself
Tl:dr: Does a 295 Black Spindle do more crit damage to Golgorath than a 311 1000-yard stare?
Edit: The general consensus seems to be that the Black Spindle is better even with the 1-2 level light drop, but that it doesn't matter what I use provided I'm doing enough damage. Reckon I'll stick with the 1000YS as I feel more comfortable using it. Thanks everyone!

Spindle is better. But you made the right call using a 311 stare over it.

13 AntwortenWhat people need to understand is that it's not your overall light that makes the biggest difference. It's your weapon light level that does. My 290 spindle was doing 66k or so to golgoroth. When it was 310,it was doing 75k +

3 AntwortenTL;DR at bottom Black Spindle has the best DPS of any sniper in game, simply due to the fact you don't have to reload. When I mean best, I mean miles ahead of any regular sniper, including 1000 Yard Stare types. The only other sniper that can compare is the Defiance of Yasmin, simply because cocoon means you don't spend time reloading if it activates. It's got a bit less than Black Spindle because you have to swap it out, and you do have to fire other weapons which might bring the overall DPS down, but it's still the only thing that holds a candle to Black Spindle. TL;DR - Black Spindle is miles better than other snipers, so it's probably worth taking the light level hit, unless you have a Defiance of Yasmin which is a close ish second to Black Spindle

11 AntwortenBearbeitet von OnlyAlfredo: 10/26/2015 1:09:22 PMDamage values don't matter, overall light does. A 16 light difference might drop you 1 at most, and Golgoroth is recommended 300. TL;DR: you don't understand light mechanics and your Fireteam member was right.
-
It doesn't matter the weapons light value. It matters overall light. If the hit wasn't too bad to your light (depending on what your light was and how great of a drop) then Black Spindle, even though lower would be superior
-
8 AntwortenIt's kinda like... doesn't matter at that point. Your light level is above 300, pretty sure all damage averages out given equipped items don't drag you back down below 300. If you weren't above 300, you would definitely be right lol, for sure. Your DPS with a 295 spindle will be much greater either way however, considering the impact is slightly higher to account for damage difference.
-
1 AntwortenYes. The difference in damage wouldn't be more than 5% if the guns were at the same impact, assuming the guns damage scales linearly instead of progressively, but the difference in impact between the guns is like 20% or something, don't shoot me for being off slightly because I can't remember, but a 295 spindle will do more damage, assuming you aren't using it on oryx, in which case the extra bullet you get from the 1k yard state will make up for the lower impact.

4 Antwortenmaybe you should figure out how many shots you can fire with your spindle in the time it takes to reload your stare. wtf are they teaching in schools these days??
-
2 AntwortenPretty sure you can see your damage output after each wipe

Bearbeitet von DsrGGuy: 10/26/2015 4:17:21 AMEven if you saw a 1000 damage difference, the amount of time saved without needing to reload will make a huge difference. Just look at the damage and base your judgment, but unless your 1000 yard does over 20k extra a shot, I doubt it will have higher dps. Black spindle was definitely the way to go IMO. Next time, instead of arguing, look into it yourself and prove to them they are wrong when obviously their concerns had merit. All you had to do was switch and try it out

To me spindle ( i don't have one yet ) is an all or nothing weapon while the stare is little more consistent and dependable to me.

This thread points out that bungie should probably clear up how light level works.

5 AntwortenSay you have 2 snipers with exactly the same impact, but one has 20 more light. Obviously it will do more damage right? Well not exactly. When wielded by the same character wearing the same gear yes. But if you wore gear that made you a 300 regardless of which sniper you use, you'd find that you do the same damage either way. The amount of light on the gun itself doesn't matter, only the total light of your character does. I hear people saying they can't use a 280 gun because it won't do enough damage to a high level enemy, but it doesn't work like that. If It only drops you 2 light overall to use, you'll still do basically the same damage. But since spindle has more impact you'll actually do even more damage with the lower light gun in this case. That on top of not reloading makes it a no-brainer.
-
If you were able to consistently land crits the DPS would be greater with the spindle.
-
Sorry man but he was right. Black spindle is that good. It does more damage per shot plus you can get off 2 or 3 more shots since you don't have to reload. It's far better even if it costs you a light level or 2.
-
Nothing wrong with 1000 Yard Stare on Golgoroth. My fireteam only had one Spindle and absolutely wrecked him 3rd go.
-
1 Antworten1000 yard stare is a great sniper. It's does basically the same as black spindle and it doesn't take up an exotic slot.
-
If your 310 light the 295 bs should only lower you to about 308. And you really only start to notice the damage reduction when your 10 light levels or more under. So on golgoroth I would think the bs would be better. It has a higher impact, the white nail perk, and since the recommended light level increases the farther you get in the raid, golgoroth isn't a recommended 320. Now if your 1000-yard has triple tap and speed reload or you have a piece of armor that buffs spec reloads, I might have to go with 1000-yard. But I think that would just close the dps gap, it might not be enough to surpass the spindle.
-
What no one seems to be commenting on is the fact that equipping the BS would lower your light level below 310 and thus add damage penalties, not sure to be honest
-
While the perk of the spindle will increase dps the value of it wont. Light level determines your attack penalty so in oryx hard at 320 vs the typical guardian at 3?? you will have a negative damage output say -25%. The weapon impact and overall rating equal your dps so lowering 16 points of light to have a perk or 1-2 seconds for reload... I would say you were correct sticking with the 1000 yard.
-
My black spindle (315) with blood bound and weapons of light crits for over 130k per shot on golgoroth.. I also wear a chest pice for extra sniper rounds. Hands down highest dps in the game
-
5 AntwortenIf your 1ky has triple tap it was probably doing better than the spindle
-
3 AntwortenI think your damage is based off your total average light, not the light on your weapon. The BS would likely do better just because you don't have to reload.

Smite with fire fly 310 1kys 319 exotic solar sword 310 thTs my set up

That's kind of silly. You DONT need a full fireteam of black spindles. I'd say 3 is good enough, since one is going to be gazer, you only have 5 dps people and if 3 of them have the spindle it should be good enough
